The subject comes up later...

I had the first 3 seasons on VHS. I was in the military, I had a single man room, and would watch them over and over. This is why I thought season 3 was the best. I never bought the later seasons on VHS, but did watch them when they came on TV (We didn't have streaming services or cable TV. We were very limited on channels). But now, watching them again with you girls, has made these episodes so much better! I had forgotten them, and maybe this had smegged up my opinions of them in the past. So much more enjoyable now. Thanks ladies.

I want to share something a friend of mine made me aware of, which has really changed the way I look at this episode. When I first watched it, I reacted much as you did. Lister obviously cares for Rimmer, and I felt that his actions here were considerate and loving... However, my friend (who is very much a Rimmer person, much like I am a Lister), pointed out that what Lister is doing here, effectively takes away Rimmer's choice. Lister forces Rimmer's hand. And yes, he does so out of love, and because he realizes that Rimmer probably won't go through with it unless Lister interferes - but is he right to do so? After all, if Rimmer's natural inclination would be to refuse, why shouldn't he be allowed to do that? Lister, of all people, should see the problem with going along with something just because it's what everyone else has done. "Are you going to be the one to break the chain?" Well... why not? The other thing, which is not insignificant IMO, is that Rimmer would be likely to see all of this as Lister being eager to get rid of him. It is, in a way, a rejection of Rimmer, effectively pushing him out. All that said... that look Lister gives Rimmer as he leaves...! I'll see myself out. (Thank you for listening to my TED-talk.)

I laughed a lot at the singing at the start before the reaction. Great stuff. Fun seeing how much joy the first two episodes of the Series gave you Gals. Lister and Rimmer's hug always gets me too. I personally like Series 7. 8 as well. It is just different which I appreciate. Sure every episode might not be a classic but at least they went for it. Hope you enjoy the next episode.
