Hi Paula. Noticing your comment about the family snapshots that Lister was showing Cat. Erm. Not Photoshop. Red Dwarf well predates Photoshop. More likely scissors and paste-up jobs that were fixed up and transmitted live to the screens on the set.

Blackadder is an awesome idea! the first season is quite ropey but season 2 onwards is up there with Monty Python. A comedy classic. At just 6 episodes a season why not.

Not sure if this has already been suggested or not, but I’m going to go ahead and put it out there all the same: The amount of time it takes to watch TWO episodes of DWARF equals the same amount of time it takes to catch a single episode of TREK or new WHO… and if memory serves, you guys HAVE covered CLASSIC WHO “2 at a time” before. Anyway, just throwing it out there… cause a world where you guys catch up and cover more ground by doing two each time would truly be a fun (in the sun sun sun) place to live. 😉

I think the first half of this episode does represent the writers trying to find that tricky balance between the setup of incredibly annoying people trapped together driving each other up the walls, and keeping them people the audience want to spend time with. But I think they get to grips with that quite quickly.

Okay, so the way the future echoes were working: the faster the ship goes, the further into the future they can see. The mirror was a few second out of phase, then the drive room convo is a few minutes out of phase. The cat breaking his tooth is several scenes early. The photograph with the babies is from the end of the episode. Bexley dying is 26 years after the episode, then old Lister is 150-ish years after the episode. Then the shp slows down and those gaps shorten to about a year, two years? after the episode at the end when we see the babies at the end. And the fact that we didn't see Lister with the babies was also a clue that he couldn't die in the episode, because that hadn't happened yet. There's also a spoiler I NEVER noticed before in this episode but I won't say what it is. I don't even know if it's intentional, but if it is it's brilliant.

Keep in mind that the first two seasons of TNG were kind of an awkward learning and growing experience that was more miss that hit in my opinion. Once they finally found their footing in season 3 all gears were turning. It's kinda he same here, but definitely worth it!

Anticipated and LOVED the flabbergasted reactions on this one… ahhhh, the realization as to just how BONKERS this show can get! You can already begin to sense here how good the writing is going evolve as well. Most of these seasons aired new while TNG ran here in the states concurrently… and while the latter will always be closest to my heart: I’ve always said that during Series 3-8, you could actually get more science fiction out of a SINGLE EPISODE of RED DWARF… than you would a WHOLE SEASON of NEXGEN combined! I still stand by that… 😉

Would definitely recommend finishing season 3 at least after 2 it really finds its feet and expands, but 1 and 2 still have some amazing episodes

I think you're perceiving these first few episodes much like I did when it first aired (was that really 35 years ago?! 😳). The pacing is a bit hit and miss, but there are enough good gags, and intriguing sci-fi plots, to keep you watching. They kept enough audience interest to get renewed, and went from strength to strength.

I'm really glad that you're going to react to all of Season 1! I hope that you'll be enjoying it enough and/or getting enough interest on your channel for you to want to continue with the subsequent seasons too. Paula's British best friend is right, it doesn't really hit its stride until Season 3. From there to the end of the original BBC run (Season 6) is Peak Dwarf!

There is also a theory that Red Dwarf takes place in the Doctor Who universe as in a 1989 episode of Red Dwarf in a blink and you miss it cameo The Tardis is seen in the loading bay. I REALLY wish something like Comic Relief had made a full crossover. Sadly we only have fan fiction to guess what the Tardis was doing there.

But I'll keep them to just two, both non-spoilery. 1 - It's funny that you say the intro music and the ending music couldn't be more different - they are the same piece of music! One major, one minor. Listen to them back-to-back and you'll see what I mean. 2 - You say that the odd-couple thing is good but it needs something else; generally speaking that may be true, but there is an amazing episode in series 3 that shows just how much you can do with two characters and *amazing* writing. Thanks so much for doing this reaction series, enjoy!

Love this show, I'd also recommend the 1981 mini-series of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for another Sci-Fi comedy hybrid. The script for the original radio version got its writer, Douglas Adams, a commission to write for Doctor Who, including City of Death that you've reacted to.
