I want to know what colour they thought it was supposed to be if not red. It sounds like it was a happy accident that the model was red. If not, maybe the outside of the ship would have been as grey as the inside.

Yeah, it was great getting those DVDs, with their behind the scenes features, cast commentaries and deleted scenes. This was the "Lord of the Rings" era of DVD extra features. ;-) Also the accompanying booklets with episode-by-episode trivia, which maybe wasn't as exciting as what was on the DVDs themselves, but they contributed to the feeling that they were packing these releases with bonuses wherever they could.

Awesome, this is why I upgraded the patreon. The DVDs were such a treat when they came out primarily for the documentaries. Sassy shit heads lol!

Is this from the series 1 dvd? If so, it's from around 2003 because I remember where I was living at the time, I was in my final year of uni. And in that case I think Paul Jackson meant to say 15 years ago, not 25. Or maybe this is another documentary they did later on. Anyway, really enjoyed this!

Surprised they had real cigarettes - it’s been Honeyrose for years. Had to smoke about 30 Honeyrose for one scene in Bodies and that was plenty, wasn’t asking for any more 😂

This definitely shows some of the key differences between British and US TV - no writers’ room (it’s just Rob and Doug) and writers are much more senior and potentially involved in production. Ultimately in British TV especially comedy and some dramas it’s all down to the writer, there’s no studio system in the same way, if the writer(s) want to stop that’s it there’s no more series. There’s a very long tradition of writer-performers too (mostly stand ups), which is less the case in the US but where it happens it tends to be people from an improv background or stand ups who have their material turned into a sitcom - but may be less involved in the day to day writing of the show. Fascinating stuff these differences.

Think there is another documentary on the earlier DVD release maybe? Goes into a bit more depth about the show getting made and talks about the names who auditioned. - Alfred Molina for Lister - Alan Rickman for Rimmer - Norman Lovett auditioned for Rimmer, Chris Barrie auditioned for Lister and Lee Cornes auditioned for Rimmer as well! Think it is more focused on the cast and their experiences, especially Craig and Chris really not getting on and Norman moaning about their football getting confiscated.

Most series of Red Dwarf seem to have been varying degrees of car crash behind the scenes. It's a testament to the whole cast and crew that the show is as good as it is, and that it's still being made. The cast were mostly early 20s and inexperienced but in later years they're far more professional, and they all get on great now. The show is definitely a diamond in the rough!

Claire Grogan's band was Altered Images, who had a few hits in the early 80s. Tony Hawks, the warmup comedian with lots of little roles, for years had a part of his website where he answered questions to skateboarder Tony Hawk that were sent to him by mistake. He later collected the questions and answers in a book "The A to Z of Skateboarding" while still knowing nothing about skateboarding.

This was great. Dr Who or Red Dwarf, I'm always pleased that you find the documentries so interesting, and they are. The main cast commentaries for each series are really fun too! but maybe check those out in your own time. There's only so much you can do, and tbh it feels like you've got your hands full already lol.

Love that you're watching the "Making of" vids. This one was for the Series One DVD in 2007, so nearly twenty years after the first episode aired. They were all looking pretty sharp. Lov that Mac McDonald never gave a straight answer throughout his entire chatting. "Dark Star is pretty good. It was a student film that became John Carpenter's (Halloween) first. It has the same aesthetic as "Alien" and Dwarf, working class people on a grungy ship in space.
