I've always appreciated that they went so hard on the sci-fi (and you ain't seen nothing yet) when they could so easily have coasted by for a few years on the 'flatshare with a gimmick' premise. I mean, they most likely wouldn't have gotten 13 series out of it, but I don't think anyone was expecting that regardless.

There is a Red Dwarf novel called "Better Than Life" where Lister, the Cat and Rimmer are living in their own individual worlds (much like The Matrix, as Paula said) until Rimmer spoils it all of course....

Katrine Myra

"There are some numbers next to it, but they could mean anything" is one of my favorite Red Dwarf quotes. I use it embarrassingly often, and in fact just put it on the family meal planner, because my husband complained I was always putting the wrong dates on there.

Josef Schiltz

I wonder if he had an encounter with V'ger.

I was wondering if the gals would notice the bumper sticker! When this episode was released on blu ray the Die Hard fans were up in arms that the sticker seemed less readable and they mistakenly called this episode Thanks For The Memories on the menu.

A nice little short for you both, Kat and Paula, the Red Dwarf outro theme piano version! At 'Red Dwarf Outro Theme - Piano Tutorial' on YouTube.

hrcaffee

did we just get a Ferris Bueller sytle end credit "shoo, go home now" 😏

It's hard to see, but the giant bumper sticker on Blue Midget reads "My Other Spaceship is Red Dwarf." I think this is the only shot it's visible in (you might have noticed that a lot of the effects from Kryten are re-used here, the moon reveal is the same one the Nova 5 was on, and the Blue Midget shots are the same). I believe they upgraded the design in Series 3, but I'm glad you like the funny little blue sub. I refer to these first two seasons as having "Wallace and Gromit" effects, cute and charming but limited. Series 3 is where we go to Thunderbirds effect.

It was more of a it made us think of that episode not that we thought TNG had done it first. It's really cool what Red Dwarf was doing so early on!

Ashley

Lister gave Kryten his Space Bike and he rode off into the space sunset.

Kirk Deighton

The series 3 blurb is vital but goes at Mass Effect intro speed. It also seems kind of ahead of its time too, somehow even more ahead of its time now than it was back then... if that makes any sense.

pbaker

This episode was made in summer 1988. I think that pre dates the TNG episode but not an expert.

I just realised I quote this episode almost every time I'm hungover 😅 the bit where lister asks rimmer what time it is and he stares at the clock then says the day and there's a bunch of numbers but they could be anything 🤣

Paul Baldwin

Small little bit of advice when SERIES 3 comes around there. Is a blurb at the start at the first episode it explains almost everything up to that point but it goes so fast you will have to pause through it.

Darryl Glynn

Don't worry too much about Kryten. He'll return in due course. ;)

Nolan

You guys missed at the end of "Kryten" that he flew off into space on his own, lol.

Mark Stevens

Another great reaction. Thank you so much.

Mark Ten

Explanation for Kryten coming... but you have to be fast (wink)

Bruce Bromley

It's going to interesting to see your reactions to the changes in Series Three. For this episode there's a fun little switcheroo that happens in the scene where they go back to the planet to bury the Black Box. You'll find out when you watch the making of Series Two video.

Chris Bordeman

One of my favorite episodes of the series!

michael mccafferty

That outro was great. Well done.

Sue the Scottish Geek

Don't worry, you'll find out more about Kryten soon! :)

Raven Stromdans

This is one of the more poignant episodes of the show and kind of gave birth to the Rimmer-fangirl aspect of Red Dwarf (yes, they evidently do exist). It's such an astonishingly good exhibition of what happens in relationships, especially when you're young and don't understand the dynamics of holding one together. "So, you were in love and it was great and somehow that you don't understand it all went horribly wrong. Welcome to the club! It's just you, me and everyone else in the universe". Just...incredibly apt. I also love the nonsense of the hologram technology and how loose they play with what holograms can and can't do. Continuing enjoying your journey and being along for the ride with you. Wishing you both, as always, a... Good Journey.
