You seemed to think the clip at 22:52 is from a later Red Dwarf episode? It's from an earlier radio series by Rob and Doug which had David Ross in the cast.

Great video. Forgot how long these docs were. It's been interesting seeing your reactions to the show because it has been the opposite to how I watched the show. I saw later seasons first so when I finally saw Series One and Two I was like WTF Holly was a guy first and why is Kryten so weird. And Hooray Ace Rimmer's catchphrase at the end. 👍👍

I dont think there is that much cultural difference at all. Men like to joke with each other, its called male bonding. Britains are really good at it, Australians have mastered the art. This is a universal thing that happens between males, its a way of making friendships, the competitive need to one up each other with a joke in order to make the other laugh is hard wired.

The hate is definitely just British cultural differences that don't translate well in the US, where there is more emphasis on positivity and being more literal with language; giving earnest compliments isn't very British either. They definitely get on for the most part :D It's just banter and deadpan humour, which is so central in British culture

Is it a cultural thing? Yes, to some extent. In the North of England there is definitely a culture of "I'm only rude to my friends". Its very different from the smooth talking Hollywood interviews where everybody is gushing in their complements of their castemates even when it's an open secret that the show was a nightmare to film!

As a Brit, I think most of what you gals perceive as them "hating each other" is actually just them "being British". Sometimes it's piss taking, sometimes they're being deadpan or sarcastic, sometimes they're just being frank and not sugar coating things. Having said that, it seems like some of the drama was real, such as the Norman situation. But, in general with these documentaries, I think you'll find that the way they all behave is more a cultural thing than anything else.

Despite watching the show itself (many) multiple times over the years I've always avoided the making of's because I'm always a little wary of seeing my heroes in real life. Just in case they turn out to be, you know, real people with flaws and I can't idolise them unquestioningly anymore. Because I'm weird. I decided to break that rule to watch along with Kat and Paula because I know they both have backgrounds of sorts in the old business of show and I thought it'd be interesting to see how their experiences of more modern productions would colour how they perceived this stuff. Turns out their main takeaways are producers shouldn't berate staffers and props guys are super cool geniuses. Which...seems fair.

I'm always so happy to see your reactions to these documentaries! I think it's because I wanted to act, or do something in the film or TV industry and allowed myself to be talked out of it in favour of doing something "financial stable" (well that worked out, not!) - don't ever let anyone talk you out of pursuing your dreams!! Fun facts - Craig was briefly a professional footballer, playing for a club named Tranmere Rovers. And William Shatner can speak Esperanto - he even did a movie in Esperanto! The cast and crew do genuinely like each other, though Norman does have a reputation for being difficult - it's kind of the done thing here to slag off the people that you genuinely like, both in your own circle of friends, and at work (if you have a good employer and coworkers anyway!). In Britain, slagging people off and giving them verbal abuse is a love language in its own right! Back at this point the only people who didn't genuinely get on were Craig and Chris and they have spoken about it a bit. It sounds more like a personality clash/professional rivalry that maybe went a bit too far at times, but they're both really good friends now and sing each others' praises. These days all the cast and crew get on with the very notable (and sad) exception of the creators - Rob Grant walked away from the franchise with no explanation, and in recent years he's been supported by Paul Jackson through a legal dispute over the rights, while everyone else has kept working with Doug (though I think Ed Bye will be working with Rob on the upcoming prequel (if it gets greenlit)).

I think they were just doing what Brits call "taking the piss out of one another". It is kind of a British cultural thing to poke fun at each other and make it sound serious while not actually being serious. Take their treatment of the French, for instance. Sure, a few hundred years ago the hatred was serious, but now their mockery is just jokes.

I don't think there's bad blood between the cast of Dwarf. More of the drama came from BTS. Especially between Rob and Doug. I think their relationships fall between the friction of the ST:TOS had and still have, and that of the loving extended family that the TNG cast have become over the years.
