Just imagine, if it wasn't for the Rank Xerox - sorry, the Racnoss - and Lance picking on Donna - and that because of turning left instead of right - and the Toymaker determining to have a second conflict with our favourite Time Lord so many years after the first, then the Doctor wouldn't have had this happy ending and a family. Funny how, despite the machinations of villainous entities, things work out in the end.

Much has been brought up about the Doctor's memories and syncing up. He has a tremendous capacity for remembering, as we all do, however whilst he has claims of precise recall - as he said to Tegan - his claims don't measure up to reality in the moment and neither is memory fully functional between incarnations and never has been. When one or more incarnations meet, they sync up telepathically and that happens via a lateral transmission that happens automatically. That's how Time Lords recognize each other in their various incarnations. Most memories, like our own, sleep in the mind and are only brought to the surface via an external stimulus. Which probably explains experiences like deja vu for instance. A pattern repeated triggers a sleeping memory. A being so "ancient" as Victoria called the Doctor in Tomb Of The Cybermen would have a massive storage compartment of sleeping memories otherwise his executive - day-to-day - functioning would simply collapse and he would be a complete gibbering wreck. Victoria: "You probably can't remember your family." The Doctor: "Oh yes, I can when I want to. And that's the point, really. I have to really want to, to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they sleep in my mind, and I forget. And so will you. Oh yes, you will. You'll find there's so much else to think about." "I have to really want to" is the point - and need to! - as in The Three Doctors, when the Third Doctor regards the flute that has appeared on the console as "vaguely familiar!" at first attributing it's presence to Jo and asking, "Is it yours?" It's only when the Second Doctor appears that, in that moment, the telepathic sync up happens. Further information is then transmitted when they sync up purposefully. I also suspect that the Time Lords have their own devious ways of making sure that memories that are inconvenient are either obfuscated or cleared completely from every incarnation of their 'cosmic makeweight', The Doctor, as time and Time Lord move swiftly on.
