Aww, Shepard was just trying to help! It's not his fault he doesn't have opposable thumbs and/or a basic understand of how recording works. But seriously - as a fellow orange cat owner, I appreciate the chaotic energy. I'm quite fond of Dear Dave. I could have done without the laddish ending, but the vending machine scenes are fantastic. Rimmer and Kryten's reactions to seeing Lister are one of my favorite things about the episode. The character writing is top notch this whole series, IMO. They really are back to their old selves. Speaking of cats: I've noticed, particularly in the more recent series, that Lister will sometimes just patiently sit at listen to Rimmer ramble, like he's genuinely interested... but it reminds me of a cat, watching you do stupid human things.

I still remember that time when Paula got him into a hug and he fought like hell to get out of it by gripping onto the back of the chair. You took a screen grab of it. It was hilarious. Although I have never had a cat myself, an elderly - and long term friend and confidant when I was caring for my mother - used to have cats migrate to her. When i would visit there would - oh! - be another cat that had 'visited'. She ended up with five. All very distinct characters. In the end, she left her house to a cat charity. People thought she was mad to do that. It showed what a kind heart she had.

Awwww, how can anyone be mad at such a cute fuzzy face? Clearly Shepard wasn't using the infamous "one orange braincell" of his people. Or maybe he was, since he managed to be so sneaky about it. And look it all the loving he got from his adoring public! As for the episode: Yeah, it was entirely predictable all around, but still funny as hell. I think Robert Llewellyn said at some point (I think in his book) that the charades scene wasn't actually scripted. The cast was basically told the few key points they had to hit, and then were let loose on the set. Most of the dialogue in that scene was improvised by the cast, which explains why the interplay between the actors has more chaotic energy than normal. It was so in character that I wouldn't have known it wasn't scripted. This is also one of the episodes that was entirely re-written at the last minute (as you noted, there's a lot of weird green screen going on, and that's because some scenes in this episode was shot AFTER the season wrapped and the sets were struck). I think the behind the scenes doc stated that this episode was originally supposed to be just Rimmer and Lister sorting the mail while trying to solve Lister's quandary, while Cat and Kryten keep interrupting. This is one of the few episodes where the cut scenes are actually rather interesting and do add something to the episode. You can see the shape of the original episode there, and there's some really good interactions between Lister and Rimmer that I was sorry to see were cut. You can see why they were cut, though, because they didn't match the over-the-top comedy of the episode, but they were some nice character moments for both of them. As everyone says, each series of Red Dwarf is its own unique shit-show behind the scenes, and Series X is no exception. I think the only sitcom that manages to match (and even beat) Red Dwarf on that front is Community, which pretty much owns the title of "most chaotic set ever!"

Series IV - Justice - Lister says "Everyone's done something that's a little bit illegal." and Rimmer responds "I haven't. Not even a parking ticket."... and then he gets a parking ticket all these decades later! I love that there's continuity with so much of the little stuff but so little of the big stuff

Cat's have no regard for content. I was streaming a Zelda randomizer a couple of years ago and mine decided to stand on my SNES reset button about an hour and a half into the run. They get away with it by being very cute though. I remember enjoying this series at the time and so far it's managing to live up to that. A definite return to form after the lows of Series 8 and Back to Earth.

It is kind of wild to think Rimmer *does* have the full time, official, very important job of keeping Lister sane. That is the explicit reason Holly brought him back from the dead. Basically he spent the episode trying to fake the job he is already doing.

Oh, Shepherd. Not a single thought behind those eyes and yet mischief is accomplished all the same. This was a fun and frankly quite weird episode with bits with the vending machines. Cat's explanation of all the ways Lister needed to not think about his former girlfriend cheating on him was CLASSIC Cat and proved a fantastic return to form. Oddly, even Lister unintentionally humping the vending machine hearkens back to when Kryten appeared to be using his vacuum groinal attachment on Lister during Polymorph. Just a solid showing all around. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here...hey. Where'd he go? Shepherd! COME BACK HERE WITH MR. FLIBBLE YOU LITTLE MONSTER!

An episode straight out of the S1/S2 playbook; yes it exists because of low budget, but it shows how they can still do that dynamic without any external bells and whistles. It's tightly written, everyone is acting to type, there's old school Lister pathos with his 'last human alive' forlornness, some good old RD ridiculousness with the doctor's note plot and Chris Barrie slipping in Kenneth Williams and David Coleman impersonations was a chef's kiss. Yeah we'll excuse the Americanism ('write you' instead of 'write to you' - grr) this time. 🙄😆

Haha shit happens. I don't even massively like cats , but that was some cute cattageness to be fair lol. This is like a Seinfeld episode of nothingness, but I liked it all the same. You got a real fun one next week! Ya gonna loce the characters.
