The order after Series 8 (called 'The Dave' era by fans because that's the name of the channel these aired on): 2009 Mini-series (can be seen as three separate episodes or in one go as a movie) Series X (2012) Series XI (2016) Series XII (2017) Movie / special (2020) Honestly? I like all of The Dave era series (yes, even the mini-series which gets unwarranted hate, IMHO). Just a head's up: the 2009 mini-series is one of those with a bit of fridge brilliance and improves immensely with a second viewing once you figure out what they're actually doing. As for this episode — Yeaaaah. You're still clocking where I was at and am at for Series 8. It makes me laugh and there are some real high points (I think the next episode would be considered a classic if it was in a different season), but some of the humor is laddish. I think it's a case of over-correcting from Series 7 and there's your issue. And don't worry about Rimmer — they kind of speed up his character growth a bit so the Lister-Rimmer double-act can thrive. One bit of trivia: The commentary for this episode features THE ONLY intra-cast member squabble that you'll publicly hear in real time. Between Norman Lovett and (of all people) Chris Barrie. It was a case of Lovett complaining about how Holly was used during the first three episodes of Series 8 to the point it was taking over the commentary. Whatever was going on in that recording booth, Barrie decided to weaponize his impersonation skills in an effort to shut Lovett up by impersonating Lovett himself, which caused Lovett to hit back. On the upside, Lovett stopped his complaining, so there was that.
