As someone who used to be a manager - heck, I even ran a small company for a while - and deliberately chose to move away from that, I also love this about Mariner. In my case, it turned out I had undiagnosed ADHD which ended up giving me health complications and partial disability, but even so: You could literally not pay me enough to go back into management. Lower Decks is genuinely my second favorite Star Trek show, after DS9 (sorry Paula). Glad you're enjoying it!

Later thought: It was revealed in the DVD commentary for LDS season 1 that most of Tendi's lines in the cold open (when she's rapidly discussing how she built The Dog) were taken from test lines used in casting for voice actor Noël Wells-- her reading was funny enough that they wrote it into the script. So from this point on we can definitely say that the actors' performances are beginning to have influences on how the characters are written. :)

The point that different people have different ambitions or levels of ambition resonates strongly with me. The problem with moving up the proverbial corporate ladder is that you might find yourself promoted right out of what you most enjoyed doing... for myself, I have never had much of a drive to manage other people's affairs; I want to work with the material and produce something (in my case, it's data and analysis) and to have to worry about six other people's problems and vacation requests and such would really detract from it all. And not everyone can be the top dog, so I don't see the point in trying to make people think that way when they may not even want to. That said, Mariner's position is a little more nuanced than just that, but we'll get into that later on. No spoilers, other than "expect character development." :)

I have to admit what I liked the most out of this episode? Jennifer Hale joins the Star Trek family. (She voices Lt. Durga.) There's a certain joy in having Commander Shepard in a Starfleet uniform.

I really like how they reference The 70s Animated Series. The Captain of the ship's race was on the Animated Series in the form of Arex the helmsman of the Enterprise. Also like how the California class ships have the red, blue, or yellow strip around the saucer to tell what it's mission is.
