I think the flashbacks are solely to make the Doctor who eastenders crossover Dimensions in Time canon as that is where one of the clips came from.

I will add one thing, as I said in the discord I'm a little baffled who the flashbacks to classic who are for. Old fans know what the frigging Rani looked like, new fans won't know who TF it is. RTD has used flashbacks this way before to pull twists together. Dropping in the Face of Boe in the Master reveal in Utopia is probably the best example. But he didn't show a montage of Roger Delgado, the crispy and rotting Master, Anthony Ainley and Eric Roberts. He let the performance and minimal exposition give the context. Moffat even introduced Dorium and the Paternoster Gang the same way giving them context and a past with the Doctor we never got to see. RTD did it with the entire Time War until late in Tennant's first run. There was balance between old and new, the reveals worked for Classic and new viewers and it felt seamless and unobtrusive. A flashback hindering the Doctor's reaction, followed by an exposition dump of retconned or new information is none of those things and fails by every metric. The only place it sort of worked was perhaps the Well to remind people of the Midnight Entity if they didn't get it from the diamond planet, exotonic radiation and the name. That one can be given some latitude but the rest? I generously described it as an interesting stylistic choice early on, but it wore my charity thin. That isn't an excuse for something that isn't working for any quarter of your audience aside from a pointless memberberry to invoke nostalgia.

I quite enjoyed this episode. Don't get me wrong, I entirely agree with all the points you made but in spite of that was content to be locked in for the ride with this weird mix of Brazil, Stepford Wives, The Truman Show etc. I bought in to the mysteries and was intrigued to see how all this got resolved. I didn't look at it as a standalone episode and perhaps because I couldn't see how RTD was going to stick the landing in one episode I was a little excited what the twist would be. It being a strong season aside from Robot Revolution (which wasn't terrible, it just fell short and was a bit irritating) gave me hope this could be a great finale. I had in mind Poppy being real, and being a baby from a space station in the future meant either she was crashing the Wish World party. Or Conrad knew more than he was letting on if she was part of his wish and was taking the two Rani's for a ride. I had a lot of fun thinking about it and speculating where it would go but I didn't lose sight of the fact this episode would stand or fall depending on the final episode. And I'll leave it there till next week. I have a lot more to say, but... spoilers.
