And would have signposted future stories.

Yeah, and if Cat had said he loved himself, Lister had said that finding kochanski was more important than finding Earth, Kryten had talked about his old love of mopping, his line about love being what gives meaning to the Universe would be a bit more solid.

All four could have had some interesting dialogue with Mr Universe, Inquisitor style.

A great episode, but we missed the chance for a dialogue between the last human being and the Universe. Maybe between Lister's pantheism and his aversion to hierarchy, he feels he knows the Universe already. No mysteries, Bosh, Done.

"ReD DwaRF ReD DWarF, Want to Watch a ReD DWarF" 20 minutes later: "MAAaaaGh". "Maaaaaaah." "MaaAaaGH" "Maaaaagh..."

Giving the universe a mid-life crisis is one of the top moments of Red Dwarf! Even though we were gifted a button at the end, I feel like we still missed something that had to be cut for commercial time. I feel like we would've had something calling back to Lister's toe.

The thing that I really love about the Dave era Red Dwarf seasons is that the characters have come around to accepting each others' foibles and faults, to the point where they kind of roll their eyes and end up supporting each other or helping each other out of the jams they get themselves into. It's like: Something happens every episode in Series X and Series XI that in an earlier episode would've resulted in a yelling match or a come-uppence. Except now that these characters are older they just go with it because, yeah, that's who that person is and so they all just kick back and be patient until said person in "krysis" comes back to their senses. You see it over and over again in all of these later series. I think this episode is kind of the perfect embodiment of this older-but-more-tolerant dynamic. Which is probably why this episode hits a little different than the episodes leading up to it.

I think this is my favourite of all of XI and XII. Last episode of XII is excellent as well though so it’s close.

Arrrgggghhh, Arrrggghhh, did I pronounce it right? BTW, the Universe sounds a lot like Morgan Freeman.

A great episode, but for me also a big missed opportunity. The premise of Kryten having a mid life crisis is intriguing, but the execution is off. There's enough plot for two episodes; the Dwarfers all having midlife crisis and dealing with it in different ways is great RD fodder in itself and ties neatly into the actors actual ageing, and another ep with Kryten meeting the universe, maybe in a manner similar to how Bender met God in Futurama, with Kryters converting to robot religion and floating in space. Nonetheless, it's still a compelling episode. The conversation with The Universe is full on Douglas Adams, Kryten's 'sportscar' suit is hilarious, the excellent Dominic Coleman as Butler almost steals the show and the 'MAAAGH' skit still has me in hysterics; they sound like a mob of crows! And can we say how great the FX are in these later series?
