Absent With Concept

My least favourite of the series - feels like lots of good ideas that aren't really expanded upon (personality tuck machine, vampire GELFs, female cat, Cat's pregnancy, emotionless Lister, three versions of the crew) and just thrown together. Lots of good gags but structurally it reminds me of the last few episodes of Series VIII which were just a bunch of set pieces crammed together into an episode.

Heh. I've revised my opinion of Series XI upwards, but I think I still like Series X just a smidge more. Series XII also has some real bangers, but one real DOG of an episode (depending on who you ask, it's either the worst or second-worst episode in Red Dwarf). But having seen the Behind the Scenes for Series XII, I think it's definitely a case of writer's intent didn't translate because it was doomed to be viewed completely differently by a younger audience. Trust me, you'll know the episode when you see it.

Fun episode. Like the previous episode whenever they speak GELF it always cracks me up. Sitting on a screwdriver was a good joke. Lister and Cat scene at the end was also a nice moment.

S12 was shot immediately after S11 (they broke for Christmas and then resumed in the new year), so I think it’s the only time they’ve done a series finale with the certain knowledge that it won’t be the last episode!

Funny That

If this episode were a Captain Jack Harkness story...? Maybe the lack of AD breaks makes the difference, but definitely enjoyed this rewatch a lot. Series XII should be another tidy box of Red Dwarf fancies.

Though it is a dream still think Lister would be supportive. Yes he made fun of Rimmer for only one woman but that is Rimmer.

It's been fun to revisit series XI. This is only my second time through it and it's a lot better than I remember it being. Definitely a worthy addition. Same with Series X. From this point on everything is new for me as well so I'm really looking forward to this.

One of my few real long term criticisms of Red Dwarf (shoves Kochanski shrine and overstuffed file of continuity errors in drawer) is that we don't have enough Cat-centric stories or lore about his race, and with a talent like Danny, that's a real shame. And even though the three Cat Women in this ep aren't real, we still get some much needed information about his people, who we haven't seen since the early days of S1! But, that will change; we're nearing the promised land... Otherwise, another great ep to round out S11; great writing (god, that birthing pool scene!), dialogue, direction (the Aliens vibe) and another Cat Costume Classic! I think Kat should do a top 10 of her favourite Cat outfits.
