it is not just the main characters, WE also assume the worst about Starfleet and keep getting surprise that it actually is what Gene Roddenberry envisioned. it is nice to have something optimistic on TV

Look, they just wanted him to "sample the sweetness" of their "bushels"

I wish First Contact included Geordi telling Cochrane, "And in the 24th century there's a churro stand right over there!"

I haven't been all that interested in some of the other content here lately, so I feel like I'm back too, since it was the Trek that got me here. Well, Avatar helped, too.

I don't know if that was the intention, but as an observer of the US (i.e not a citizen) there was a part of me that felt vindicated to see a depiction of a colored character being framed, and "the system" really working for her, because the system in this utopian future is based on respect, truth and trust, rather than self gain and entitlement. I have to be honest, when I first watched that episode, I was on Merine's side, seeing everyone around her telling her to "trust the system" didn't comfort me at all, because it played so much into what I already knew of the systemic problems in westerns society. In my mind, even without recognizing it, a part of me saw Rutherford and Boimler and said "yeah, like a cis-gender straight white male can do that, but Carole Freeman isn't a white female, tendi isn't Humen and her husband is a literal Admiral...Of course they're all going to believe in 'the system'..." When the system actually worked in this episode, it hit twice as hard for me because of my expectations.

I have to throw another voice in favor of watching the crossover episode between seasons 3 and 4 of Lower Decks, it's amazing!

🙋♀️ I happened to watch this episode before I got to the TNG movies, so I didn't have the specific reference, but - just as you suspected, I got the idea and felt the love and warmth of a theme park celebrating first contact and major space exploration history. Also, I recognized James Cromwell's voice, so it was a big giveaway that there was a reference there to some other piece of media in the franchise. Funnily enough, watching 'First Contact' *after* this episode I had an adverse reaction to Cochrane's character, as I expected from this episode's depiction of him to be more cheery and welcoming - I literally had my Geordy moment of "never meet your heroes" when I finally watched the movie 😅😅

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WE'RE BACK BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!!

I'm excited that season 3 is here, always so much fun watching Lower Decks

I just remembered that watching "First Contact" is going to pay off AGAIN in Season 5, so we were all double-never-wrong.

I love that a running gag in this show is that Starfleet is way more competent, earnest, and dedicated than the main characters assume it will be. In any other scifi comedy show, you'd have Starfleet be the butt of the joke. Also, I love the idea that technology has advanced so far that a *warp capable ship* is common enough and can be made safe enough that it's used as a theme park right that children can go on!

Also: the first girl that approached him was dressed like the mascot of SunMaid Raisins.

I'm bad with spice too. Like I can house a bag of flamin hot cheetos. but if something has black pepper on it I'll be like "oooh this is spicy" but Ill also like drown stuff in siracha.

I watched Those Old Scientists without ever having watched Strange New Worlds and I still enjoyed it. Just having general Trek knowledge was enough. Sure, I could tell I was missing some context/details, but it didn't bother me.
Lizbeth Marcs
Heeee! I knew you'd light up like Christmas trees when we got to the theme park! If you're willing to take another recommendation, I highly recommend that you watch "Those Old Scientists", Season 2, Episode 7 from "Strange New Worlds" after the end of "Lower Decks" Season 3 but before you start Season 4. It's a cross-over that is aaaamaaazing and really leans into Boimler's and Mariner's character development from Season 3. It's funny and heartfelt and a really good time. You don't even have to be all that familiar with "Strange New Worlds" (although it helps for some small references). All you need to know is that "Strange New Worlds" is about the Enterprise under Captain Pike (the captain that immediately preceded Captain Kirk). Other than that, you're good to go!

Captain Morgan Bateson was the captain from the past played by Kelsey Grammer from the Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect" where the Enterprise D kept colliding. The cool part of this was that Bateson was the captain of the USS Bozeman, which tied back the First Contact site. -Both the sweater Rutherford wore and the vest Boilmer had on in Sisko's were clothes that Jake Sisko wore while in the DS9 episodes set in that restaurant.
Matthew Palmer
I love the fact that on earth, all the girls go crazy over Boimler. And why wouldn't they, He's in Starfleet! Even the lower deckers are bold space adventuerers!

ESPECIALLY when we contradict ourselves, yes!

And good job remembering the outro.

Welcome back, Season 3 is full of adventure and fun. Episode 6 is full of references I think Paula is going to freak out, in a good way. #SaveLowerDecks

Thank you for always remembering that we are never wrong, especially when we directly contradict ourselves.

Please watch Star Trek Nemesis before S3E06. A major spoiler is given. The film before is skipable.
