My Sunday nights (courtesy of my local PBS station) was Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Waiting for God, and 'Allo 'Allo (eventually replaced with the Piglet Files). I basically went 5 years across two states with that same Sunday night line-up thanks to that PBS station. I was a newspaper reporter at the time, so this was my chill-out time after a stressful week.

There was a time where my sunday midday was an hour of Scrapheap Challenge (Junkyard Wrs in the US) hosted by Robert Llewellyn and an hour of Time Team. Aaah happy days. Channel 4 eventually dropped Time Team after messing with the format (identical story with Scrapheap Challenge) but is now making new shows on youtube & I think passed the 10k patreon backers mark. It really is a good show to chill out to.

Was the book called The Man in the Rubber Mask? I had that book.

The change between Series 1 and everything that comes after is that the writing partnership changed. In Series 1, it's Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson as the writing pair. Starting with Series 2, and including the Christmas special, the Red Nose special, and the movie, it's Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. The thing is, Atkinson and Curtis were long-timer co-writers by this point (and in fact were co-writers on Mr. Bean which came after Blackadder). But for some reason, I don't think their partnership served Blackadder that well. Ben Elton was just a better fit for the material, I think. A slightly interesting note: Robert Llewellyn mentions in his book that Red Dwarf was filming at the same time as the later Blackadder series and specials, so they'd see the Blackadder cast around Shepperton Studios during lunches and breaks. A lot of the Britcoms that filmed in the mid- and late 80s and 90s all have the same sensibility and all came from the same creative pool where writers were taking some big chances to break out of the "living room" comedies. Llewellyn's behind-the-scenes book is actually really interesting on that front because he really captures the time and place.
