There is an element of choice by both the namer and named in the direction of evolution. You could say the two groups of dragonewts are following different paths according to their goals.... Demon Lords are at the top of the world order on the monster side, they are in theory opposed to humans, whose analogous persons are Heroes. Demon Lords are independent, usually rule large territories, jockey for power among themselves, and each have their own goals, with individual variations in personality.
