This is my favourite opening from Naruto. And to answer your confusion: they are neither first nor sedond years. They are no longer in school since they graduated the academy(i explained a bit more in detail in a previous comment). They are full working shinobi/ninja of the lowest rank(genin). But yeah, Neji's group graduated a year before our guys who are rookies(freshly graduated from academy). Also the sub is wrong there. The point/condition was to protect a ln important/precious person, not a "previous" person. Maybe a typo on the sub.
