(just for me/in my opinion) the story in Skypiea was still very serious (esp since it touched on themes really important to me as a South African). Despite that, the comedy was amazing and didn't impact the serious story in a negative way. So I don't think a serious story should mean less comedy necessarily. But ofc if Oda chose to focus more on the story than adding comedy, that's 100% his choice and I'm loving OP regardless. But I just wanted to say I don't think you *have* to have less comedy when a story becomes "more serious". I personally think the story is the same level of serious, except that some arcs had "darker" things happen (considering it's a shonen, like characters we know and love dying). But yeah if by serious you mean there is a larger overarching story that's important now, as opposed to things being more "arc by arc", I understand.

you are absolutely right about early one piece comedy. I think it makes sense though as the story has become more serious since sabaody. but its nice that comedy still gets incorporated every now and then.
