Technically, most of DBS was released as anime first and the manga version was later. So it is not a Toei issue of them adapting the manga slowly since they were coming out with the story first. The manga didn't pass the anime until after the anime ended.

Also talking about manga reading, you could read that is your choice anyway, but anime adapted manga pretty good till DBZ end. DB Super from other hand manga version and anime are different in many ways. So Dragon Ball Super is where things became more complicated and where it is prefable to read manga and watch anime. Because DBS is TOEI anime and you know how TOEI could destroy pacing and etc.

I’ve actually never watched the original Dragon Ball in Japanese. I watched the uncensored Funimation dub back when I was 12, so this will definitely be a new experience for me. And I freaking love early Dragon Ball, it’s what got me immediately into One Piece on the first episode. And mainly because I like adventure shows with the most stupidly random, cartoony humor lol

I suscribed for DB reactions from you to support yours decision. Also I hope you will make at least small reviews after each 4-6 episodes, case arc reviews are possible only at the very begining, but there will be arc that will take 50 episodes and more. So it will be nice to hear your fresh thoughts about bunch of episodes that you just watched, while arc reviews is much more difficult thing. Speaking about yours question, how many episodes DB have, overall you need to watch only DB, DBZ. DBS and some movies. For example Dragon Ball GT after DBS became not just not canon series, but due events of DBS it can't even exist in the first place. But like DBZ and DB it's already 400+ episodes anyway.
