At no point in the beginning of this restoration did I think it was as big as it was. Like, I knew it was "big" because of the engine size, but like with the Sally Saw, it's just so much bigger than at first glance.

Likely cus they hate us? Slightly more likely is that welding aluminum wasn't much of a thought when they made it. There is a glimmer of hope, depending on if you can find out exactly Which hiduminium alloy they used... Not liking what I'm seeing so far. It's a precipitation hardening alloy, and the hard part is the ~ 1% nickel and iron they threw in... Likely a solution anneal, weld while soft, then re heat treat for full strength, but finding filler to match that mix would be tricky. *might* be able to get away with using 1100 but you'd have a "soft" spot after, and that's assuming it didn't ruin too much of the properties in the HAZ...

Out of personal curiosity, what alloy was it? I am well aware that many alloys are "near imposable" to weld but I like to figure out the "near" part... like is it imposable because it involves heat treatments that are too expensive to deal with, or does it actually have a metallurgy that prohibits welding.... 7075 is a good example. In the "finished" heat treatments of commercially produced parts, a normal weld will crack like 99% of the time in a weird delayed fashion because of one of the alloying elements not playing right in the as welded condition. However if one has the facilities and reason to do it, 7075 can be welded then heat treated and will work fine...

My guess would be that the company was just trying to avoid chainsaw bar patents for some reason and then designed a bow chainsaw around patent shenanigans to get to this thing?

I was so happy to see the rusty old Canadian spark plug fire - hope it says in the final build! Pro: Finds the missing dough funnel for the big noodle cutter on auction. 😲 Con: it’s a rare part for the larger “B”/“2” size cutters, so they want 50$ for a bit of cast aluminum. 😮‍💨
