This wasn’t new. This was reflex. Programmed. Scarred in.
That was it. That was the whole mission now.
I moved.
“His Quirk,” I shouted, bat raised, “he disassembles and reassembles matter. Do not let him touch you.”
That was all they needed to hear.
Chisaki clicked his tongue. “What an annoying brat.” As he moved, he shifted his stance. He would not engage unless he had to, but he was not going to just stand there either. Eri was too important for his plans.
Nighteye threw the first piece. It shot through the air like a bullet. Chisaki’s hand twitched. He barely dodged, his sleeve nicked, successfully stopping his attack.
Chisaki exhaled sharply. “You are making a mistake.”
Izuku had already started pulling civilians away, Mirio backing him up. They did not argue for the time being. The situation had already spiraled past discussion.
“Yeah,” I muttered, swinging my bat at Chisaki’s head, “real fucking tragic.”
Nighteye’s rook flew like a sniper round hair-breadth away from my face.
Chisaki’s coat flared as he twisted away. The rook clipped his arm, not enough to draw blood, but enough to ruin his angle.
He reached for me anyway. Fingers like scalpels to reconstruct me.
I twisted. Just missed it. Close. Too fucking close.
Nighteye threw another chess piece. Chisaki ducked.
I charged low, angling for his ribs. He wtisted, but Nighteye’s rook clipped his arm—just enough to ruin his timing again.
Chisaki lashed out anyway. Fingers aimed and twitching.
I ducked under, felt the air shift past my cheek.
He moved like a man checking blueprints mid-combat. Trying to solve us instead of beat us.
Nighteye threw again. Missed clean. My bat came around.
He blocked—but flinched. Leaping back, “You are really pushing your luck,” he said.
I rolled my shoulders. “Yeah? What are you gonna do about it?”
He smiled. Then he reached into his pocket. A vial.
I moved.
So did Nighteye.
The chess piece cracked against Chisaki’s hand, the vial slipping from his fingers. He clicked his tongue, shifting his stance. He was not panicking, but he was done playing.
I braced as he lunged again, faster this time. I barely had time to swing before—
BOOM.
The street cracked behind him. Chunks of concrete went flying.
He lunged again. No grace this time—just rage and desperation.
I backpedaled, breath catching—
A figure slammed down like a meteor, landing in a crouch that cratered the asphalt. Dust spiraled.
Mirko.
She came down like a meteor with a vendetta.
Chisaki twisted—too late.
Her kick clipped his shoulder and sent him skidding three meters, coat torn, heels digging in to stay upright.
He didn’t fall.
But he noticed her now.
Mirko landed in a crouch, grinning. “Miss me?”
Chisaki inhaled through his nose, stepping back. His fingers twitched again, calculating. Mirko was not someone he was confident to face without planning.
Another weight hit the street behind her.
Ryukyu hit the ground a second later, her gaze sharp. "What is going on here?"
Sir Nighteye looked at Mirko and Ryukyu. “Your intern just ruined months of preparation and revealed our plan to the enemy. We need to catch Chisaki now. You better pray we can bring his gang in, or this will cost you dearly.”
The switch in my mind flipped.
“You fucking piece of shit who calls himself a hero.” I stepped toward him, my bat still in hand. “You wanted to hand a frightened little girl back to her abuser in the name of the greater good? Are you fucking Dumbledore? A god? Or some third-rate anime villain?”
“Midoriya—”
“I don’t care about your operation.” I jabbed a finger at him. “I don’t care if I can become a hero after today. And I don’t give a single fuck if I get thrown in jail. If I see a scared little girl, I will burn this city down before I let her go back. Now fuck off and let me do my job.”
Chisaki exhaled sharply, rolling his shoulders. “So much trouble over one defective child.”
Nejire’s grip on Eri tightened. “Shut up.”
Chisaki raised his hand. The ground beneath him cracked. A wave of concrete shot up, shattering outward. Dust filled the air.
I moved. So did Mirko.
“Nejire, get her out!” Ryukyu’s voice cut through the chaos.
Chisaki reacted fast. Too fast. A spike of pavement shot toward Nejire’s feet. She twisted mid-air, grabbing Eri tighter as she rocketed upward. The spike missed by inches.
“Mirko—left flank!”
“On it!”
She vaulted—foot to stone, twisting mid-air—
And hit a wall. Literally. A slab of concrete Chisaki had reshaped, right in her path.
Chisaki was gone.
I turned fast. “He’s—”
The street behind us erupted. A black car screeched to a halt. The doors swung open.
Mirio moved first, arms raised to shield his face as another wave of debris flew at him. “He’s getting away!”
Chisaki stepped out from the dust, as he reached for the car. Never looked back.
I charged.
A wall of concrete shot up in front of me, forcing me to skid to a stop.
“Mirko—”
She had already launched herself over it, but another burst of rubble forced her back.
Chisaki turned his head just enough to see her. His fingers twitched. The pavement under her cracked and collapsed, sending her stumbling back.
Ryukyu shouted mid-shift, “Get clear!” But Chisaki was already moving—like a man who knew he had already won.
I ran. The wall rose.
“Mirko!”
She leapt again, and again—rebuffed by another burst of earth.
I screamed in frustration, bat slamming into reinforced stone that refused to crack.
“Fuck this.” I swung the bat at the wall in front of me, but Chisaki had already restructured it, reinforcing the material. The car peeled out, swerving around a corner.
Mirko kicked off a nearby building, trying to get an angle. “Shit—”
I bolted for the nearest alley, looking for a shortcut. No use. By the time I hit the next street, the car was gone.
A second later, sirens wailed in the distance.
I gritted my teeth. “Fucking coward.”
Sir Nighteye caught up, dusting himself off. “He’s gone.”
Mirko landed hard, cracking her knuckles. “No shit.”
“You sabotaged everything.” Nighteye’s voice was too calm. The kind of calm that cracked glass. “You think this was bravery? It was sabotage.”
“You should be praying that we can still salvage a single thread from this catastrophe.”
I turned slowly. Bat still in hand. Breathing heavy.
“The fuck did you just say to me?”
For a moment, silence.
Then Mirko exhaled sharply, running a hand down her face. Not her usual sharp-toothed grin, no sarcastic remark—just a slow, measured breath as she looked at me. That was the first bad sign.
“Midoriya,” Nighteye said, voice firm, measured. “Do you understand what you’ve done?”
I tilted my head, flexing my fingers around the bat in my hand. “Yeah.”
“Then say it,” he challenged. “Explain to everyone here what you just did.”
I inhaled slowly, then exhaled. “I saved a child.”
Ryukyu’s arms were crossed, her jaw tight. Second bad sign. She looked like she’d just watched me torch my own future and smile while doing it.
“You compromised everything.”
“I saved a child.”
“You turned this into an open war,” he hissed. “Do you think you’re a hero? You’re a reckless fool, and you just proved it to everyone here.”
“Then arrest me,” I shot back. “Call it what you want, but I did what none of you were willing to do.”
Chisaki was gone. The streets were quiet, but that silence was loaded. Sirens howled in the distance, the taste of dust and destruction thick in the air. The police would be here soon, and when they arrived, I had no illusions about what would happen next.
Nejire wasn’t looking at me. Third bad sign.
Mirko rubbed the bridge of her nose, a deep frown on her face. “Kid, you fucked up.”
I scoffed. “Maybe.”
“No,” she snapped, stepping closer. “Not ‘maybe.’ You. Fucked. Up.”
Her voice wasn’t angry—it was something worse. Frustrated. Stressed. Not because she thought I was wrong, but because the system didn’t give a damn about right and wrong.
And Mirio—fuck, Mirio looked devastated. Like I’d just put a bullet in his ideals. Like I had spat on everything he believed in. His hands were curled into fists at his sides, trembling.
“You think this is about saving the kid?” Mirko’s usual cocky smirk was nowhere to be found. Her jaw was tight, fists clenched at her sides. “The Hero Public Safety Commission does not give a shit about your good intentions. You just spat in the face of an entire operation, went rogue, and publicly humiliated your superior. They don’t let shit like that slide.”
Nejire shifted uncomfortably, still holding Eri, her fingers tightening slightly. She wasn’t looking at me, her usual bright expression dimmed with something close to worry.
Mirio, though—he was staring at me like he’d just watched me dig my own grave and smile while doing it. His hands were curled into fists, but there was no fire, no frustration. Just a kind of dull horror. “Ryuu…” His voice was low, uncertain. “You… You don’t understand what you just did.”
I rolled my eyes. “Oh, my bad, was I supposed to let her go?”
“No one is saying that,” Ryukyu cut in, her tone firm but controlled, the way someone spoke when they were trying to keep a situation from getting worse. “But there were protocols in place. Months of planning. Oversight from the Commission. Legal pathways to ensure this didn’t turn into a media circus.” She exhaled sharply. “And now? It’s exactly that.”
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder.
“The Commission is going to come down on this hard,” Mirko continued, her gaze flicking toward the approaching flashing lights. “You went outside the law, ignored orders, and made the police look useless.” She looked at me, and for once, there was no amusement in her red eyes. Just a quiet, certain understanding.
“They’re going to make an example out of you.”
The words hung in the air.
Nejire finally spoke. “Even if you did the right thing…” Her voice was softer than usual, hesitant. “You broke so many laws doing it.”
Mirio swallowed, his usual sunny confidence completely gone. “You… You might not be able to come back from this.”
The sirens got closer. Police cars skidded to a stop. Officers rushed out, weapons ready.
Chief Tsuragamae stepped forward, his ears twitching as he took in the mess. His eyes landed on me first. “Midoriya.”
“Sup.”

“Midoriya Ryuu.”
The weight of my name in his voice wasn’t anger—it was something heavier. Final. A judge about to deliver a verdict.
I didn’t speak. Didn’t move. Just watched as he turned his attention to Nighteye, his ears flicking slightly, eyes narrowing behind those deep-set wrinkles.
“Explain.”

I sincerely hope that Ryuu is cleared of the charges, I also hope that Ryuu explains Eri's power in the next chapter.

Yeah. I really hated when they let Eri go. Those were Izuku and Mirio, two top contenders of True Heroism that passed All Might and Stain's evaluations.

Honestly, my boy should just go full rogue. Overhaul’s storyline with Eri in canon is fucked beyond belief, and the moment actual evidence of that pops up everywhere it’s gonna prove that Ryuu stopped a monster from torturing a chil.
