Actually, a water screw is an Archimedes screw. Their boats are basically running on an oversize jetski configuration water rocket engine, no moving parts. Which is actually great for longevity. Little in the way of wear and tear.

Ooh, you're right! Lori is basically hand-making anything, but there's really no reason she can't make stuff from molds, other than she hasn't really needed to make so many of the same thing so many times that a mold makes sense. And a wooden mold wouldn't really stick to rocks or bone. The closest would be the rocks she has made to line the farm plots on the third level. Hmm... Thanks for the idea!

a wooden part that can be used to make a mold to cast parts from bone would be best.

Interesting that Covehold has informed bound tool owners to stop using beads. That makes bound tools a lot less useful. That this is a recent thing is interesting. That implies that the flow of beads from the Old World previously matched or exceeded the use by bound tools and wizards, but has fallen behind. Maybe the number of bound tools grew faster than influx of beads, or maybe the influx of beads has slowed down. Has colonization rate (and colonists with beads) slowed? Or perhaps the value of the exports of materials from the new world to the old has declined, reducing flow of beads from trade? The lack of beads also implies no one on the new continent has figured out how to produce them yet including Covehold, at least in large quantities. I was kind of worried they'd already be in production at least by Covehold's binder. I'm kind of skeptical of Rian's plan here though because as he pointed out they'd need to deliver a whole lot of beads regularly to maintain a solid market this way. Selling them through a trading company would be a lot easier and more stable. Someone would eventually start competing but if he's betting on Lori's work ethic anyway they'll still be the most reliable source. Even if the trading company can bargain them down with competing sources, that still applies through workshop sales.

As to ordering something that’s actually useful a ships screw was the exact right move to make to make. What with their demanse’s primary means of trade and transport being water based. Either way it’s all about getting his foot in the door and testing the waters.

Ah, so Rian just wanted to be circumspect. Well, maybe he should've thought it through a bit better... Something like a custom wheel or axel would make more sense for a rush job, and require a laythe to make quickly. But I guess he doesn't know for certain if this carpenter has a bound tool lathe, even if that's very likely, and if he doesn't he wouldn't be able to change the request without confessing to his ulterior motive.
