As long as Rian is buying goods in Covehold then the marked beads will go back out into the economy. However I think this will generate so many beads that Rian won't be able to spend them all and the coldhold will basically become a treasure ship taking beads back to lorian. Alternatively Rian can start a bank in Covehold and start investing :P

They're selling unmarked beads to be used as fuel rather than currency. This means less marked beads are used as fuel and thus stick around in the system. Because of the ratios Rian is getting they're saving a lot more marked beads from being used than they're receiving. Plus most of the marked beads Rian gets are just going to be immediately spent in Covehold on other goods Lorian needs so won't be leaving at all.

I feel like selling unmarked beads could eventually lead to a problem where too many marked beads could be removed from the Covehold economy.

hehe ssshhhhhh i like not knowing the relative value of anything! It makes me feel less dumb bc im American and don't understand metric anyways XP

SCM2814

Exactly!

Given you were just using renamed metric for distances, I suspect a sengrain is actually a kilogram. This is reinforced by "sen" being Japanese for "thousand", and a thousand grains sounding a lot like a thousand grams. Plus 5 barrels averaging 145 kilograms each when filled with salt sounds about right. Further confirming this is that a 25 chiyustri diameter bead is 21 grains. We know that beads are similar density to glass or counterfeiting with glass wouldn't be a concern. 25mm diameter would give a sphere of 8.18 cm cubic, and glass has a density of 2.5 grams per cubic centimeter which would give 20.45 grams. Bead-tani as a measure of value is interesting. I wonder what denominations beads come in? That skins and furs are almost exactly the price of salt per kilogram is quite surprising though. I would have expected them to be significantly higher as they are the primary export good from the new continent to the old one. That the oldest surviving demesne outside of Covehold can't protect more than their population is very surprising to me. I would have expected them to be more developed. Maybe Lori is doing even better than I thought. Lorian can put up significantly more than their own population inside their shelter if needed. This merchant house employing at least 4 Mentalists is interesting. It suggests they're quite available in Covehold. "small mid-large" is just such a bizarre term. Double small at least makes sense. But how many sizes of beads are there? We've heard double small (this time), small-mids, small mid-large, mid-large, and large. That would be 5 on its own even without there being any of the other the implied sizes from that scale. But we know from "Not a Dungeon Core" that beads only come in 4 sizes: 10, 15, 20, 25 Chiyustri diameter. I don't see why 10 bead-tani per large bead would be too much though. A small mid-large is *at least* 2 size categories smaller than the large beads he's selling. If we figure that the progression in value is something like 1, 5, 10, 25, 100 like coins, or 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 like bills, that suggests that the large beads he's selling would be worth 5-10x as much as the small mid-large if they were at face value. So he was selling them yesterday for 5-10% of their likely fiat value. The energy content can't be too detached from their fiat value or they'd never be used for their energy content, and we know they are. Energy content scales with the volume, and the volume of a 25 chiyustri diameter sphere would be 4.63x that of a 15 chiyustri diameter sphere, which means that 2 large beads would be at minimum 9.26x the energy content of small mid-large. Why would anyone ever use them for fuel if their face value is 10x their fuel value? Conveniently this scenario actually lines up neatly with the typical progression of currencies as a large bead being 4.63x the energy content would line up neatly with it having a 5x fiat value like the difference between a $10 and $50 bill. I have a suspicion Rian will get quite a good deal here because Ravia seems *very* eager to make this deal.

Why would any wizard teach her, when they could trick her and kill her and steal her core for themselves?

BRUNO ASTUR

He has to convince her that the easiest way for her to get the other magics is to have mages teach them to her.

Nnelg

I would say Rian should offer a branch location, but Lori might have a fit. And it would ruin their current communist utopia! (Maybe once Lori loosens up enough to allow some Mentalists in, so that they can handle running the economy for her...)

BRUNO ASTUR

I didn't remember that. Sorry. I knew it was silly.

SCM2814

See above.

SCM2814

It's a job mentalists have. From EX SS 18 – "What If… Lori Was A Mentalist Instead Of A Whisperer": "Being a courier hadn't paid as well as being an accountant, or a secretary, or a computer, but it had allowed her to fly while being paid for flying, which she considered far better." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_(occupation)

Computers o_O ??? Hmmmmm...

BRUNO ASTUR

Computers Rian, what are computers? It almost seems that you are an isekai, but what would be silly.
