After some consideration I've returned to say that I think Taeclas and Lidzuga are good choices for the story. Both have interesting personalities and motivations that should entertaining. As much as I thought I liked Telref, I think I was mostly just empathizing with him.

between one and three deadspeakers and their families, if I remember correctly. She gave permission for more than one I remember for sure.

Thats not entirely true, sure they can power a pre-set machine, but remember that wizards also use the beads to do active workings that require more care than a machine cutting a straight line or drill making a hole. And there is no machine that can join two pieces of otherwise-useless scrap wood to make it into a larger workable piece, or shape a pile of rubble into usable bricks. One of the main reasons they aren't keeping more wizards around to do the work is because the cost of beads was too high to justify paying for the beads and the wizard's time. Now that the beads are going to go back to a more steady supply, the issue of it being more expensive will drop and the wizards can get back to more regular use.

How many deadspeakers was he supposed to recruit? I think Rian might have some explaining to do when they get back home.

>"…" I '…'-ed. "Most likely." I really struggled to understand what you meant here. I'm a bit disappointed Sharrod isn't the one picked up. I thought his family would fit in really well in Lorian. >For a moment, I wondered how the sudden return of relatively cheap, usable wispbeads would affect the carpentry workshops of Covehold Demesne. It would very likely increase their productivity, but would that lead to them being able to hire more people? Would it result in Taeclas being able to find a more regular job? Rian doesn't understand this at all. Cheap wispbeads are a substitute good for wizards. It lets carpentry workshops use bound tools for things they currently hire wizards to do. It will likely lead to more out of work wizards rather than less.
