It's not complicated, it's just that Apple wants their cut for the privilege of being in the Apple App Store. They don't care about their partners' business model or any other nuances; it's a 'just shut up and pay me' sort of relationship. Their hubris is insane, but nothing new.

Daniel Quaid

weird, this is so easy to circumvent, is the fear (or hope, in Apple's case) that people will just see the price increase on Patreon app and think "Oh, the creator's price went up" and pay more / unsubscribe? Is Apple forcing Patreon not to direct users to other platforms for payment, or warn them in any way that they are wasting money?

I recommend everyone not to take subscriptions through the Patreo application for Apple. If possible, subscribe through the web.

That's gross. Patreon should give creators the option to disable IOS subscriptions then. If Apple want's to be that way (thoroughly unsurprising as it may), Just push people to subscribe on the web instead.

I don't understand why Patreon has an app in the first place :/

As it seems to me, since November of this year, new memberships that are contracted through an Apple device can only be paid through the App-Store and its billing system. "Apple’s requirements As we first announced last year, Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024. This has two major consequences for creators: 1.- Apple will be applying their 30% App Store fee to all new memberships purchased in the Patreon iOS app, in addition to anything bought in your Patreon shop. 2.- Any creator currently on first-of-the-month or per-creation billing plans will have to switch over to subscription billing to continue earning in the iOS app, because that’s the only billing type Apple’s in-app purchase system supports. Before we go any further, we want to be crystal clear about one thing: Apple’s fee will not impact your existing members. It will only affect new memberships purchased in the iOS app from November onward. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate this change in the least disruptive way possible."

Clarification: my membership was likely done through an Apple device, but is not paid by app store funds, Apple gift cards, or my Apple account. How does this affect the poll?
