Your audience (and people who consume criticism generally) need to learn that ratings signal level of enjoyment. Enjoyment can be due to a variety of different reasons and two albums rated the same are not necessarily enjoyable for the same reasons (e.g. people taking personal offense that DAMN and Lil Pump are both 7s). It really gets my goat when I see "you are so wrong, this album is at least a whatever/10" as if there is an objective standard for art.

I Fight Dragons is probably the most underrated band of the 2010s. Their most recent record kind of sucks, but KABOOM! and The Near Future (especially Kaboom) are some of the the most extravagant and well produced electronic rock albums I’ve heard. Highly recommend giving them both a listen.

I honestly feel sad when I see that a lot of people fail at understanding what this is all about, just get mad, don't try to understand different points of view, and start a conversation. You're going to dislike this one. I always listen to albums twice at least just to cement my thoughts. Public Strain - Women has annoyed me both times. Both times I have felt like I just watched a foreign film with subtitles off. I love new ideas and I respect the quality and consistency but it sounds bad. I don't want to listen to it again and it is kinda frustrating because I feel like I'm the outsider for an inside joke. Bells is a great song but it just reminds me of Life Metal by Sun O))) which I would rather listen too. Is that the point (to make someone uncomfortable) or am I approaching this wrong?

While it’s cool to hate on The Beatles at this time you can see their range of influences and hear the quality of their songs in covers. Listen to Siouxsie’s cover of Dear Prudence, Al Green’s take if I Want to Hold Your Hand or Gunship’s recent cover of Elenor Rigby. Some of their songs have aged poorly and are cringe now but when they were on they were on, and it shows when cover by their contemporaries or ever later generations.

The new Mr. Bungle EP is a re-record of demos that the band made while they were in high-school but almost every publication is promoting it like it is entirely new material. With that said I thought it was a pretty fun record, but the material definitely sounds better in a live setting. Dave Lombardo is blessed/cursed with the tendency to make any record he touches sound like Raining Blood.

You took Mouth Dreams too much at face value. I think it should be viewed as a concept album, representing a peer inside the mind of Neil himself, with various edits and samples throughout the record referring to sleep, dreams, and transitioning into alternate realities. If you take this into account, songs like Yahoo, the intro, Limp Wicket, Cannibals, Spongerock, Wah, Brithoven etc. take on new enjoyment if you imagine them as pop-culture-saturated dreamscapes where the samples are actually coming from their sources, much like Neil's early animations (Ultimate Showdown). The album also has great structure/pacing to help it's "journey-like" feeling.

While listening to a happy or uplifting song while I am happy is great but its the last thing I want to hear when I'm sad or angry, I'd much rather listen to music that matches my mood. I like listening to music that empathises with my mood rather than to a song in hopes to change it, to me it helps me move on much better, besides, I hate to be told "calm down" when I'm upset and I definitely don't want to be told that musically, but some people seem to feel like listening to music that mirrors your mood must amplify it which I don't find is the case all the time.

It is difficult to relate to a TV host that feels like he's acting though. The Roots are the best part of that show for sure.

Not a bad point. However the compulsive urge to inflict negative emotions on people just because you can is some borderline psychopath behaviour. I know internet culture has normalized the phenomenon of "trolls", but they're a shitty aspect of the human race that exists to cause harm for enjoyment and that is net bad.

That makes sense mostly but sometimes a universally accepted "fact" is just something that many/most people can agree on. You will always find options that disagree with you but sometimes a bad mix is evident to the majority. We may not have "bad mixing" down to a solid science but if a highly mixed snare damages ones hearing ability then we might be able to set a benchmark. We do know how many decibals can damage someone's hearing so that is certainly something to consider. Otherwise I don't have much of an argument against this. To the contrary if you can't hear an instrument that was intended to be heard then that also would be a questionable mixing decision. This is a complicated topic though in any case.

a Crow looked at me is more spontaneous, minimal and rough around the edges than the 10s he has reviewed. It's a tragic album and the way it was made is completely fitting but it wasn't created with the air tight presentation of the other 10s. It is still a quality album nonetheless and very hard to listen too.

Not saying I hate Jimmy Fallon but the Roots are the best part of his show. His predominantly white audience probably doesn't see the gravity of having a legendary rap group as his house band.

That's also why memes are successful. When we try to criticize the bad ones they only become more common because the ones who make them double down based on the audience reaction.

I mean this is anecdotal but it didn't confuse me when I first searched for his review on TLOP I saw both results and figured out pretty quickly what was going on.

I can't remember but I'm pretty sure he said it annoyed him. Even good songs sometimes just annoy people. Happy by Pharrell Williams is a great example of a quality song that many people love to hate even though it was commercially successful.

Tom "Corny" Macdonald is not a bad person. He lacks perspective and is not in touch with his emotions enough to engage with his empathetic side. He looks at people as groups instead of individuals but that doesn't mean he is not capable of changing that outlook. Does he deserve our time? Should we try to politely engage in conversation with him & do you think it will yield results? (When I say we/our I am referring to people with generally left leaning positions or socially conscious outlooks. People that, he typically likes to...."offend"...lol)

Game Theory is not talked about enough as one of the best Roots albums. It has Black Thought's best rapping (imo), it's super dark and gritty, both from a lyrical and instrumental standpoint, and the songs have extremely sharp topical focus. GT easily goes toe to toe with Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart.

Apple Music is underrated for often having very well written album descriptions(Cosmogramma and Boarding House Reach are great examples).

If there's a conversation to be had about the best covers albums of all time, I think The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge should go down as one of the greatest ever made. It's cohesive, focused on one artist, the instrumentals are stripped back and minimal (just one guitar and one voice provide amazing and raw renditions of some of Bowie's best songs), sung entirely in Portuguese, and serve as a testament and loving tribute to David Bowie's genius musical output early in his career. Bowie himself has praised Seu Jorge's performances and re-working of his songs by stating, "had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."

I feel that the Mothers of Invention discography is better than Frank Zappa's solo discography (if you consider them separate from each other), the former having amazing albums such as Uncle Meat, One Size Fits All, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and We're Only In It for the Money, all incredible works in my eyes. I still like a number of his solo works, especially Lumpy Gravy, Hot Rats, Jazz from Hell, Joe's Garage and of course Apostrophe, but the Mothers really had such a consistent quality with their albums in comparison, ie. not a huge fan of the 80s Zappa for the most part.

Nine Inch Nails are one of the best produced bands from the 90s and have influenced so many other artists to aspire for that level of dense but not always as abrasive production style. I'd say The Downward Spiral and The Fragile are masterpieces for their time and even now although some of the edgy lyrics didn't age that well. The entire "personal journal" vibe of the lyrics make it very emotionally palpable.

artists should definitely experiment and push themselves outside their comfort zone while creating, but if it doesn't turn out well they can't be mad that people don't take to it. not every experiment will pan out, but if the effort is genuine, that will be appreciated by the fanbase even if it's not accepted or liked. in other words, fans don't hate when artists try something different than they're used to, they just hate when artists try something different and it happens to turn out poorly

Psychedelia in the 60s was one of the creative peaks of the 20th century and as a result genre fusion was increasing normalized throughout modern music.

As someone just getting into Between The Buried and Me for the first time, Coma Ecliptic and Parallax 2 are underrated if only because they're still way better than Silent Circus even at their lumpiest. The band's best albums are forward-thinking and boundary pushing but their first two albums were playing catch-up with other metalcore outfits of the day like Converge, The Red Chord and even Mastodon to an extent.

TikTok is a handicap on popular music as of now. If songs continue to get big just because people dance to them on tiktok the future of hits will be just to cater to that crowd. Not to mention the influx of one hit wonders

The noisier tracks off of R.E.M.'s Green are pre-grunge and surely inspired Kurt (as he has cited R.E.M. as an huge musical influence on him) and the Nirvana sonic landscape. Also, New Adventures in Hi-Fi is extremely underrated and is hardly included in the band's best album argument compared to Murmur or Automatic For The People. P.S. People that still believe objectivity exists should not have their opinion taken seriously in the slightest. Everything from good/bad songwriting, good/bad mixing, good/bad performances, good/bad concepts, etc., ultimately boils down to how you feel about those certain things, not a legitimate professional standard of criteria that everyone on earth has to follow. It’s legitimately laughable to see many people in your comment section use the argument, “you’re not looking at it objectively” in your controversial reviews.

I’d much rather hear a Ernie Isley guitar solo then a David Gilmour solo. Isley has more groove, swagger and life to it. It also feels more integrated into the song itself. Whereas Gilmour’s kind of seem like they’re this odd branch splitting from the core of the song. They suffocate the other instruments and kill the momentum of the song, case in point, Money. It feels cold.
