Rap music between 2005-2009 was mediocre.

Pretty Hate Machine aged terribly and if I'm being honest i dont think it was ever that great. The lyrics are incredibly corny and campy (including lowpoints like "Rain Rain go away") and the vocal performances are terrible for the most part. Some of the instrumentals (Sin, Head like a Hole) are very good and keep the album from being terrible, but overall it pales in comparison to what NIN would do later and is hard to listen to and take seriously.

I feel like you might roll your eyes at this melon... Abbey Road would be a 10/10 if we cut out the chunk between track 9 and track 14. That portion of the album dips just a tad out of 10 territory. I'm not saying that section is bad though. Mean Mr. Mustard is enjoyable.

India's influence on western music is talked about very little if not at all, a lot of the experimental elements of rock and jazz relied heavily on sounds and aesthetics from India. Especially during the 60s for Rock and the 70s for Jazz. Psychedelic music would not be what it is without Indian culture especially it's aesthetics.

Sonic Highways is too overhated, when in fact it is one of the best Foo Fighters albums. Not every album in their discography is as diverse as SH, and not many FF albums can boast songs as beautiful as I Am a River and Outside.

Can only speak for myself, but while many of my favorite albums of other genres tend to live and die by the linear journey and progression they curate, the noise (and ambient) projects I’m personally drawn to tend to have some sort of defined atmosphere or a sculpture / painting quality to them. When you admire physical art, you consider the feelings it draws up in you, the tangential thoughts it leads you to, and if you feel enveloped in the world it invites you inside of. In the same way I can paint three lines on a blank canvas and call it Mona Lisa 2, any Bandcamp Joe can slam seven layers of distorted drums on each other and call it noise record of the decade. Wild noise should not be the main metric of good noise. Admittedly it can be hard to ground yourself in these genres because you’re operating without familiar song structure or the musicality of more conventional sounds. But at the end of the day it’s like this: In any genre you have to ask, do you enjoy THAT specific curation of music? More than just liking the novelty of some of the sounds? Has what you heard emotionally shifted you in any direction? I would start there. A few interesting ingredients can make a stew taste like a whole lotta bad if those ingredients are skittles, red cabbage, and a liter of Jack Daniels. Hope this provides some perspective. TL:DR - Don’t consider the ingredients as much, consider the stew.

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is the best album by The Cure. While Disintegration was a magnum opus of honing in on that goth synth wave sound, Kiss Me is a lot more eclectic and varied in its styles. There are pop songs, new wave, harder rock songs, and experimental tracks that are layered with dense, theatrical synths and production that encapsulate what the band does best. There are some moments where Smith is just screaming his brains out over the band's erratic playing, and it all makes for an era-defining listen.

Failure's Fantastic Planet is the greatest record to come from the grunge movement. It is a remarkably creative meditation on drug abuse and social isolation that gradually evolves from grounded 90s alt-rock into much spacier excursions, representing a drug user's gradual disconnect from the world around them. Every song manages to tackle the aforementioned themes in unique ways, which is impressive given how ubiquitous they are in popular music. Their ambitious approach produced a more powerful and significant artistic statement than even the best records of their more popular contemporaries.

Dubstep (and other forms of bass music) is often GROSSLY overlooked in the grand scheme of things in the music industry. It had its big moment in the early 2010s and then fizzled out by 2015ish. But now in 2021, people in the scene are putting out some of the most creative and interesting music right now. Some examples being, Space Laces, Phonon, Aweminus, Akeos just to name a few.

JUSTICE FOR GOOD LONG ALBUMS. It’s far too easy of a layup to criticize albums that are “too long”. Without fail, anytime a recently released album’s runtime exceeds 70 minutes, you cough and bump into the line of RYM members/Pitchfork staff/general music fans foaming at the mouth to call it bloated (likely with having only given the full thing a passing first listen, or not having listened through much of it all). No, you don’t need to listen to the entire 100 minutes of Culture II to know that it’s going to continue stream-grabbing ad nauseam, and, yes, ear fatigue exists (even though no one is saying you have to listen to any of these projects in one sitting). Just the same though, is every inch of Sandanista! or To Be Kind or All Eyez on Me or Shaking the Habitual or 69 Love Songs or The Epic (or more recently DJ Sabrina, Matmos, AG Cook) as essential as the last? No, but the runtime allows those artists to worldbuild, vibe out, explore, get loose, and experiment - a special experience not every album can give you, nor an experience every album is supposed to give you. Let alone a “properly short” one. Sum > parts.

I used to be an immense red hot chili peppers fan, but I can't listen to many of there songs anymore because of all the weak Anthony Kiedes vocal performances and pervy lyrics. I can think of plenty of well written songs and believe that he's a capable lyricist, but it seems he too often prefferred to ruin a decent instrumental by poorly singing about his penis. Plus the whole thing with him fucking a 14 year old girl makes a lot of the lyrics even harder to get down with.

I also made my living from youtube and this is topic I think a lot. As a content creator who criticise music how can you stay in touch with the ever changing music landscape? When will be strange that someone from a very different generation criticize the culture of the youth? Could you even notice if you lost your edge without someone point it out from the outside? Tier lists are so much better than worst to best because the former provides a better gauge into how strong an artist’s discography truly is - placement within the continuum (F-S) and explanations - as opposed to the former where the audience automatically assumes the worst is simply “not listenable” and vice versa. In essence, tier lists add another dimension that a worst to best cannot.

HIM is one of the most under appreciated goth rock bands ever. Yes...they could be corny, their fans can be lame, and one of the Jackass guys popularized them in the States. However, they still boast some of the most infectious guitar work in the Gothic music realm and Ville Vallo is one of the best vocalists and lyricists in rock history.
