I remember that, when I was writing the novel, I wanted to find an expression that avoided using the terms slave or submissive (or similar ones like servant). The reason is that slave was reserved for a more serious type of relationship (as shown recently with Julia and Emily) and Gabby would reject the idea that she was submissive initially. Gabby didn't know what bondage was in the beginning, and if Emma had used the word submissive (or servant, etc.), it would reveal a lot. I found the expression "to be in bondage to" here https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/be-in-bondage-to I agree it's not common, but using only the word bondage helped to keep some mystery around bondage for Gabby in the first chapters.

the phrase "in bondage to her" still sounds not good, but so strange and alien to me!:/
