CONTESSA DOESN’T UNDERSTAND DOG PARKS

Their owners stood in small groups, chatting and laughing, occasionally calling out a name when their pet wandered too far.
Contessa stood at the entrance, watching. The puppy at her feet—small, dark-furred, and still growing into its oversized paws—looked up at her with eager eyes. She had brought him here for exercise and socialization. That was the intended purpose.
Maggie, already a few steps ahead, turned back with a grin. “You gonna let him go, hon?”
Contessa hesitated. She had taken all the necessary precautions: a secure collar, a well-fitted leash. Yet the idea of releasing control, even in a designated space, felt… unnatural.
Maggie crouched and scratched the puppy behind the ears. “Go on, sweetheart. Have some fun.”
The puppy yipped and tugged at the leash. After a moment, Contessa unhooked it.
Instantly, he was off—racing into the fray, tumbling into a whirl of paws and wagging tails. He yipped again, his excitement bubbling over as he chased after a larger dog with boundless energy.
Maggie straightened, watching the chaos unfold with a smile. “See? He knows what to do.”
Contessa folded her arms, scanning the scene. “They are uncoordinated.”
“They’re playing,” Maggie said, laughing.
“There are no defined rules.”
“That’s kind of the point,” Maggie replied, her tone light.
Contessa frowned slightly but said nothing. The puppy was rolling in the grass now, paws flailing as another dog nudged him playfully. He barked, delighted, and the other dog barked back.
Maggie nudged Contessa’s arm. “You ever think about just letting go for a bit?”
Contessa glanced at her. “Letting go of what?”
Maggie shook her head, still smiling. “Never mind, hon.”
They stood in silence for a while, watching the dogs race across the field. The puppy, now streaked with grass stains, skidded to a stop near Contessa’s feet, his tongue lolling and eyes bright with joy.
She crouched down, running a hand over his fur. He was panting, exhausted, but leaned into her touch, tail wagging, eyes bright with unspoken trust. Unmistakably happy.
She didn’t fully grasp the mindless chaos of it all—the barking, the chasing, the mess.
But when he nuzzled into her palm, warm and content, she found she didn’t mind.
