Breaking Down Two Oscars Controversies
🕑 Added 2022-03-31 19:05:48 +0000 UTCHi folks,
I wanted to direct your attention to two new episodes of Culturally Relevant I released this week:
- I spoke with writer Tirhakah Love about "The Slap Heard Around the World" and why the reactions to it might've been so polarized
- I spoke with writer Jen Yamato about the controversy around the anti-Asian scenes in Licorice Pizza
These conversations sum up a lot of my feelings on these topics over the past days/weeks/months. I appreciate your support, which gives me the time, energy, and resources to pull episodes like this together.
Thanks for being a Patron and I hope you enjoy the episodes!

I thought this was disappointing tbh. I appreciate trying to stay open to both sides of the debate but not all positions are created equal. There was no justification for this violence and to give any justification air time is disheartening. I don't think you can say "what he did was wrong" then proceed to spend 30 minutes to essentially defend his actions (hey, i've slapped people too!) . teach the controversy? Do you know the best way to avoid the stereotype of the angry black man that hits people to defend their lady's honor? Don't be an angry black man that hits people to defend their lady's honor. Humbly imo.

The conversation with Tirhaka Love was very engaging. Thanks for putting that together. I found his perspective fascinating, jarring, and frankly a bit off-putting, but I'm glad I got to hear it.
