Breaking Down Rumble Down Under | Sly 3
🕑 Added 2025-01-26 17:00:14 +0000 UTCI'm writing this less than 12 hours before this actually goes up, but let the record show, I am on schedule! This one probably ended up being the most stressful episode I've put together yet, and I can't even pin down why. I think I just really wanted to do this level justice considering how much hate it gets, and, for some reason it just refused to render. I do think it turned out quite well for all that.

Mask of dark earth almost feels like it would've served better as a final boss. Being an ancient evil possessing Carmelita drawing on her anger and contempt for sly after their damaged relationship and sly having to find a way to stop the mask without killing her and the fignt being this grand multi phase big event. But instead it's just kind of a filler boss that only happens because Carmelita conveniently showed up. I guess it kind of acts as a pivotal story shift since it's where the Cooper gang finally expands but the boss itself feels inconsequential to the narrative.

I feel they really needed to benefit having a literal face to the level here, perhaps having a Sleazy Business Warthog who doesn’t care about boundaries of ecological sustainability is but a line to cross for profits

It's great to see another episode on Sly 3! (Okay, this is random but: at 39:24, Sly for some reason channels his inner-Clockwerk and turns his head a full 180 degrees backwards. Wut?)

This level really demonstrates how otherwise strong character writing can flounder without compelling personalities to bounce off of. The Mask is an object, Carmelita is MIA until the very end, and Guru not having subtitles derails any conversation he's featured in. With how limited the animation is, nothing can be conveyed without characters reiterating every sentence he "speaks".
