There were different zoned testing areas during the development of nuclear weapons, area 51 was the designation of the particular zone where the facility was built, so the name stuck.

Funny thing about Area 51 is that (as far as I can tell) no one knows how it got that name. It’s officially known as Homey Airport (KXTA) or Groom Lake, so you could technically call Area 51-chan Homey-chan or Groom-chan.
