There had been no window in the room where he was held, and the door was thick enough he could only hear the muted drone of people speaking when he put his ear against the wood. The soldiers had not mistreated him, but their manner had been brisk and unfriendly. Twice a day he’d been handed a meal on a tray and during the evening meal they also emptied his chamber pot and refilled the Glare oil in his sole lamp. Someone with a sense of humor had ensured he was left with a single book to spend his hours on, ‘The Comprehensive Watch Regulations Codex, revised 98 Sails’.
A bookmark had even been left on the page about the punishments for use of force against a fellow member of the order, which had been funny enough Tristan couldn’t even feel annoyed.
“Here,” Lieutenant Mani said, sliding the bundle across the table. “Check everything is there and sigh the release papers.”
She’d already handed back his few personal affairs, which left only his weapons. The thief undid the black cloth – how ruinously expensive dyeing everything in that color would be, if not for the order’s monopoly on Iscariot snails – and methodically put on his weapons. The blackjack and the knife, then the holster and the pistol. Powder and shot had been removed from it, thankfully, as it would play havoc on the steel barrel otherwise. But Tristan could not help but notice that his five powder charges were missing and there was not a bullet in sight. Neither were his two vials, the venom and the volcian yew.
He flicked a gaze up to the lieutenant and found her staring back unblinkingly. For a second, he considered not signing. Asking for his vials and ammunitions back instead of taking the petty punishment on the nose. But then it wouldn’t end up with Mani forking up the goods and letting him go with a scowl, would it? She’d draw it out, send for a captain, for additional papers for him to sign. Tristan would end up stuck here for another hour, if not several. No one beat a gambling house at dice, no matter how fine they rolled.
He cut his losses and signed. There was not a flicker of expression on the lieutenant’s face as he did.
“Is there,” Tristan asked, “anybody waiting for me outside?”
He did not truly expect Captain Wen to make the effort and the Thirteenth should be in class, but it was not only them that might be awaiting his release.
“No,” Lieutenant Mani bluntly said. “Neither your brigade nor the princess’s. Off with you, Abrascal.”
No one saw him out. It was not a new thing to him, scorn from those running the law where he dwelled, but the cold stares were no more pleasant for it. Tristan pulled down his tricorn and squared his shoulders, walking out into the street.
It was fourthday morning, so he’d missed the first expedition to Lamb Hill.
He had been isolated enough he couldn’t even overhear gossip about how it went, so he’d have to go digging – later, however. For now the students of both years should still be in Scholomance so there was no point in canvasing opinions. Besides, he thought with a look at the shadows on either end of the street, he was feeling more than a mite exposed. It was doubtful that his trick at the Old Playhouse had dissolved the Nineteenth, meaning he likely had several Skiritai currently after his scalp. Much as it might be his preference, he must avoid moving alone too much until measures could be taken to disarm that danger.
He’d had little to do but think, alone in that room, so when he set out it was with a destination already in mind. Tristan had not thought it worth it to shell out the coin for the records of the members making up the Nineteenth before, given how much the price would eat into his funds, but the time for that hesitation was past. That and he needed to replace the substances he had lost – his Dosage box was low on paralytics and he’d just had his entire stock of volcian yew stolen.
The Chimerical first. He could move out after he’d refilled his arsenal and gained his bearings.

Nothing about Hage’s coffeehouse was an accident.
The Chimerical was a front for the Masks, but the old devil still made a tidy sum off being the only coffeehouse in Port Allazei and importing beans by the bag. Having the front door of the Chimerical replaced wouldn’t even have put his ledger in the red for a month, much less repaired, but then that wasn’t the point. Every time someone had to fight to wrench the old door open, as he just had, it slowed them down and gave Hage advance warning. A tripwire that did not look like one.
Tristan held his breath as a burst air slipped through the open door, avoiding the worst of the smell of bitter beans and berries but his steps stuttered as he stepped into the shop.
Music was playing.
The Chimerical looked empty, a shadowy place cluttered with curios – floating froggy limbs in jars, a slowly ticking grandfather clock whose pendulum was a crescent moon, a Tianxi wilderness painting that looked like a ravaged battlefield if you half-closed your eyes and over it all the stuffed alligator hanging from the ceiling with its perfectly preserved teeth. Yet never before had Tristan seen the music box on the counter, if it was indeed such a thing.
He had never seen a music box like it: a wooden box inset in bronze and pearl, but the insides were whirling gears and at the heart of it was an incandescent, glowing piece of glass that a thin bronze needle was scratching. There was something terrifying about the machine, as if Tristan was beholding a great sacrilege, and it sang like no box. It was a man’s voice that echoed through the Chimerical, intertwined with a violin.
Together they sang a sad, gentle song.
“I once knew a man in Saraya
A canal-lord, crowned in gold
friends, he said, do you remember
the peace we had of old?
And his army roared like thunder.”
The violin sliced a pause like carve of a knife.
“I once slew a man, in Saraya.”
It was a soft tune, Tristan thought, almost wistful.
“O Father, are you smiling
at the weeds you have sown
or the sickle that we swing?
The reaper man’s own.”
A flicker of movement from the side, Mephistofeline padding out from behind the counter. The fat black cat moved silently, for a creature his size, and approached Tristan with his tail raised.
“I once loved a maid in Jiushen
A scholar, so clever and bold
Saying: beloved, why must we die?
I have found methods of-”
Tick. Tristan turned, startled, and found two fingers raising the needle in the music box, folding it away through a clever contraption. Hage stood behind the counter, a tall old man in green jerkin over a high-collared doublet that worked with his feathered beret to making him look almost owl-like.
“Sit,” Hage ordered.
He did even as the devil took a porcelain cup from the shelf and picked up a slender white cloth to begin cleaning its no doubt already pristine insides.
“A sad song,” Tristan said. “I’ve never heard it before.”
“It is old, by men’s reckoning,” Hage simply replied.
Tristan bent to stroke Mephistofeline’s head but before he could the cat hissed and showed him his buttocks, waddling away to hide underneath a bench. It stung oddly, even though the cat threw such fits all the time so he might be appeased with treats. He dragged his stare away. He’d come here for a reason, he reminded himself, not listen to music boxes and play with the cat.
“I’d like to see the menu,” Tristan said.
Hage set down the cup on the shelf, turning to lean his elbows on the counter.
“We’re out,” the devil said.
His jaw clenched. Tristan had known from the start that Hage would disapprove of the way he’d used the dragon snail venom he’d bought in this very coffeehouse. Odds were it’d even been made into an extract below his feet: poison students used the alchemical workshop in the basement to brew and distil all manners of things.
“Nothing harmful,” he stiffly said. “Only paralytics and soporifics.”
“We are,” Hage mildly replied, “out.”
His fingers clenched.
“You can’t be serious,” Tristan said. “Even soporifics?”
“Do you think there is any wisdom, Tristan Abrascal, in handing a child a knife instead of a loaded pistol?” the devil asked.
I am not a child, Tristan did not say, because it would have made him sound like one.
“I’m aware that I went over the line,” he forced out. “I am currently looking to mitigate the damage.”
“As am I,” Hage evenly said.
And even as the devil grabbed the cup again and resumed cleaning it, Tristan realized that his eyes had not left him once since he entered the shop. Observing, tallying. He was not looking at an instructor, right now, but a winnower. And the same hand deftly holding porcelain could crush his windpipe with barely any effort, faster than he could blink. He swallowed.
“As you say,” he stiffly conceded. “How much for the records of the Nineteenth, then?”
The cloth stopped moving.
“Your permission to buy from the Krypteia index has been suspended,” Hage told him.
Under the counter, Tristan’s nails dug into the wood until the rim of them ached, until he feared splinters.
“It’s only information,” he said with forced calm.
“Yes,” Hage agreed. “More dangerous than any of poison. Denied the first, why should you be granted the second?”
“You’re leaving me with nothing to use,” Tristan bit out.
“I am leaving you with the tools you’ve proved worthy of wielding,” Hage said. “You are not forbidden from trading with others, or barred the Chimerical. But I will not put weapons in your hands that you would wield against watchmen.”
A flare of heat in his gut because really? This again? Another Krypteia game that involved walking over him, getting shafted when trying to do something necessary, and he was supposed to just fucking smile?
“Are they?” Tristan harshly said. “Are they actually here to be Watch, Officer Hage?”
He leaned in.
“Because I’m just a student, but Yaotl Acatl looks to me like another plot from up high that I’m expected to let whip my back before bleating out thanks for it. And the moment I actually do something about her, you blacklist me."
"You did not shoot Yaotl Acatl, boy," Hage said. "You shot Ahuic of Zapala.”
The devil stared him down.
“Which was within acceptable bounds of violence, considering the circumstances. But you then used a second-class restricted substance on an unarmed, helpless watchwoman.”
He breathed out. Getting angry would get him nowhere.
“A simple gunshot wound would have been fixed within the day,” Tristan flatly stated. “You know that. For something so straightforward Lady Knit would have demanded a minor price. Without the poison, the girl would have been back the day after with every intention of attacking me.”
And he could not expect to fight a grudge-bearing Skiritai with any degree of success. It was one thing to shoot her in the back by surprise when she was fewer than ten feet away, another to actually fight someone qualified to join the Militants. The moment he had wounded the girl, he had needed her gone for good.
“In other words,” Hage calmly said, “you made a severe mistake in judgement, which you now seek to use as justification for debilitatingly poisoning a promising Skiritai Guild inductee not for something she did in fact do, but something she potentially might have done.”
The silence felt damning. Tristan’s teeth clenched, because some of that was true but it was true in a void. Without any consideration to what surrounded it, the reasons he’d actually acted that way. It might have been a mistake, how far he went, but it wasn’t a mistake sprouted out thin air.
“If the Watch offers no protection, what else are we supposed to do but protect ourselves?” Tristan hissed out. “Would anyone have done a thing when Acatl came for us, after we waited for her to take the first blow? Let’s not pretend she didn’t publicly declare her intention to run the Thirteenth out of Scholomance.”
“Yes,” Hage said. “And since this would have involved outside powers in the affairs of Scholomance, this was a punishable overreach. By involving her patron or appealing to the Obscure Committee – a member of which is currently in the city, as you well know – you could have had her sanctioned.”
Of course he said that now, Tristan scorned. The rules were always fair, when you were caught breaking them. Yet somehow never when you needed them enforced. The old devil leaned forward.
“But Yaotl Acatl will not be, because of what you have done. Instead you lost the Watch a skilled recruit because you acted thoughtlessly and then tried to clean up behind yourself by using a poison we usually reserve for putting down elite contractors,” Hage said.
“Your skilled recruit drew a blade on me,” Tristan flatly replied.
The devil slammed the cup he’d been cleaning on the table and it broke with resonant crush – porcelain shards went flying. Tristan killed his flinch and remained very, very still.
“You act,” Hage icily said, “like you are at the mercy of everyone you encounter. Because you are, inside your head. But the reality of it, Tristan Abrascal, is that you have power.”
There was the sound of clicking teeth even though those in Hage’s mouth did not move at all.
“You have been trained,” the old devil said. “You can obtain the personal record of anyone on this isle. You can buy poisons most men do not even know exist. You have ways to bargain favors with Masks scattered across your entire year. You have the backing of a strong brigade and a well-connected patron.”
Hage’s fist clenched, crunching the unseen, and powdered porcelain fell like sand when he opened his hand.
“You were not the weaker party at the Old Playhouse, no matter what you may tell yourself to justify the brutality you wielded against a girl wearing the black,” the devil said. “And if this is how you wield the privileges you have been granted, then they are suspended.”
Hage met his eyes straight.
“No menu. No index.”
Tristan kept his voice calm. He had come here looking to mitigate damage. This was just another instance of it.
“For how long?”
“Until you have proven responsible enough to be handed a knife,” Hage harshly said.
There was no point in calling it unfair. Fair never meant anything. He’d gone too far, and now the Krypteia was hanging him out to dry – to become an example, though of which kind was yet to be determined. There was no fight that could be fought inside this room that would win him anything even if he won, so instead Tristan nodded jerkily and rose to his feet. He would have left without another word, but the devil stopped him.
“It isn’t enough to make the right choice once, boy,” Hage said. “You have to keep making it, else it never meant anything at all.”
Tristan did not answer, for there was nothing to say. It was the kind of warning no one received twice. He’d barely taken a few steps towards the door when the song started again, right where it had stopped.
“-of old
That we might never say goodbye.”
A slash of violin. He could almost see his father’s smile, the effortless way the man had wielded his bow.
“I once slew a maid, in Jiushen.”
The last of the sad, pleading refrain followed him out as the door closed behind him.
“O Father, are you smiling
at the weeds you have sown
or the sickle that we swing?
The reaper man’s own.”

Desperate times, unfortunately, required desperate measures.
Tristan knocked at the door a second time, withholding a third when he heard movement on the other side. It was cracked open a moment later, brown eyes lighting up with recognition. Sergeant Mandisa opened the door fully, scoffing as she did.
“You cost me ten radizes, you little prick,” the tall Malani complained.
“Good morning, Mandisa,” he replied. “Pleasure to see you as well. Is the captain in?”
“He is, you louse,” she groused. “Out back, come on I’ll show you.”
Mandisa had spoken more insulting words than anyone else he’d encountered today, but somehow the utter absence of malice in them took out all sting. She moved aside, gesturing for him to enter. He politely inquired what she’d actually bet on as she led him through to the back garden, or what should be one. Somehow he could not imagine either she or Wen Duan gardening.
“I bet that there would be no dramatics at the Old Playhouse,” Mandisa told him. “After Angharad cut a man, last year, it seemed a sure thing no one would try.”
“No one told the princess, evidently,” he replied.
He’d meant to be pithy, but it came out it bitter. He wiped his face clean of emotion, but not before Mandisa caught it.
“I don’t blame you,” she quietly said. “It does good, the Watch. Better than any crown I know. But its gutters are no cleaner than anyone else’s. I wouldn’t have trusted the Garrison to handle that girl for me either, at your age.”
“But now you would,” Tristan said.
“The order pulls through, when it really matters,” Mandisa said. “But there’s no point in me telling you that – it had to earn such trust from me. That’s not something you gain secondhand.”
No, Tristan agreed. It isn’t. Mandisa let him out into the ‘garden’, which proved to be a weed-strewn field leading to the backwall of the next house over. It was overlooked by a small kitchen window and made for a decent shooting gallery, which was exactly what Wen Duan had turned it into: there was a straw man on a stick standing in the distance, and a tall column of stacked stones by the captain where he had lined up powder and shot. The man glanced back his way as he approached, light catching on the side of his golden spectacles.
“Abrascal,” Wen Duan greeted him. “Enjoyed your little vacation?”
“The amenities were princely, by Murk standards,” Tristan replied.
A roof over his head and two meals a day? There were hundreds back home would have done much of anything for such a punishment. He glanced at the target curiously. Tristan had never seen Captain Wen shoot a pistol before, though from what Song had said he was a more than decent shot with firearms and the patter of shots here proved as much. The straw man at the end of the courtyard had a gaping hole in its chest, tattered papers remnants along the edges of it.
“Keeping sharp?” he asked, coming to stand by the man.
“Best that I do,” Wen Duan said. “At this rate the Thirteenth will get itself thrown out of Scholomance and I’ll be back on the field soon.”
Tristan hid his grimace. It was always best to starve Wen out of reactions, else he would mercilessly pounce on any visible weakness. The thief folded his hands behind his back.
“I made a mistake,” he admitted.
“A mistake is what we call it when Mandisa uses my peerless octopus marinade on calamari, Tristan,” Wen said.
A frustrated groan drifted out through the kitchen window.
“One time! I did that one time, and I was eleven years old!”
A pause, then they both went back to pretending they didn’t know Mandisa was eavesdropping.
“What you did,” Wen continued, “was walk up right to the edge of public execution, then throw the crowd a wink and a giggle.”
“Ah, but was it not a very charming wink?” Tristan replied, feigning a smile. “Surely it made up for all the unpleasantness.”
“Eh,” Wen shrugged. “Your little sightseer speech struck a chord, I’ll grant. Izcalli’s an old friend to the Watch, but they’re only marginally more popular than the plague with their neighbors. There’s now a lot of patrons asking questions about what an Acatl is doing in town, which probably pissed all over whatever plan her Watch handler had.”
“I weep,” Tristan flatly said.
“You should,” Wen told him. “Anyone picked to run a game on the House of Acatl is going to be at least a colonel. I wouldn’t be surprised if you just kicked a sitting Conclave member in the balls.”
He startled, but not at the colorful image.
“You think it’s the Watch running a game here?” Tristan asked with a frown.
“I think whoever let the princess in made the bet that either we’d end up with a Skiritai that opens the door to contracts in Izcalli that we would never be entrusted with otherwise,” Wen said, “or that when in a couple of months when she runs we’ll get the fattest bribe in living memory to let it go. But then the girl picked a fight with a powder keg, to predictable end.”
Tristan swallowed.
“You don’t sound angry,” he said.
Wen finished ramming down the powder and ball, set down the ramrod and aimed downfield. Cock, click, bang – the lower chin of the straw man burst, strands flying every which way. The large man clicked his tongue, as if dissatisfied.
“I’m guessing you went to the Masks before coming here,” he said, “and Hage let you have it.”
His fingers clenched.
“Not an inaccurate assessment.”
“You should be glad,” Wen noted. “If he’s still chewing you out it means you’re not going to have an accident sometime over the next few days. He still thinks you’re salvageable.”
Tristan stiffened. The thought had occurred, but hearing it spoken from the captain’s mouth was unexpected.
“You know about…”
“How you masklings gets your bad weeds weeded out?” the large man finished. “Sure. I was never formally briefed, if that’s what you’re wondering, but if you work with Krypteia long enough you learn to read between the lines.”
Wen began cleaning out the barrel.
“It’s only sensible to be discerning when you’re raising professional liars with the power of life and death over fellow watchmen,” he continued. “I imagine that’s why he’s so miffed with you – you followed the rules of Scholomance, sure, but in a way that showed you to be completely unfit to be a Mask.”
Tristan swallowed as he watched Wen fill the pistol. He’d not thought of it that way at all, but now that Wen had laid it out it was difficult not to see it.
“I need advice,” he admitted. “I put myself in a corner and I’ve been blacklisted from the tools I need to get out of it.”
“Have you?” Wen asked, then pulled the trigger.
Smoke billowed, and this time the shot was centered in the middle of the head. The captain let out a satisfied noise.
“I can no longer draw on Mask resources,” Tristan stiffly said.
“And that means you’re out of tools?” Wen asked.
“I can’t ask the Thirteenth-”
“This,” Wen Duan mildly said, “is why I call you ‘that little idiot’ when talking about you to other people. Forget the Thirteenth, Tristan. You shouldn’t, most of them are better than you in every way, but let’s say so anyway because it wasn’t anything any of them did that won you the privileges you lost.”
He paused.
“I don’t have another brigade to split in half to impress Hage,” Tristan bit out.
“What’s the Nineteenth, then, wrongly sauced calamari?” Wen snorted. “Three of them stuck by the Acatl girl even after you bestowed social leprosy upon her. You want Hage to treat you like a Mask again? Do the fucking job whose salary you’re trying to collect and look into why.”
A moment passed.
“I thought you’d tell me to back off the Nineteenth,” Tristan finally said.
“Don’t be an idiot,” Wen dismissed. “The princess might be keeping her head down at the moment, but I had a look at the brat and she is frothing at the fucking mouth. If she catches you in an alley, you’ll end up on the hospital front steps with four tourniquets and no limbs. If you don’t get ahead of that you’ll be on the next boat headed off this island.”
“I’m not sure there’s a lot I can do to prevent that short of…”
He cleared his throat, not quite spelling it out.
“You should go looking for a method anyway,” Wen advised. “Because I’ve been ordered to report it should I believe you are intent on killing another student, and I will.”
Tristan swallowed. He did not ask to whom, because a name wouldn’t matter. It’d be to someone in the Krypteia, some handler in a dark room who would read the report and cross his name off the list of the living to balance the order’s books. Too much trouble. Unfit. Bring in another. Wen was, in his own way, warning him that he was now out of luck in every way.
That made twice today he’d been warned his life was on the line, which made it all the more frustrating that he couldn’t risk the obvious de-escalation – arranging for him to be defeated in a manageable way, something that would sate the other’s side need for a win without costing him too much. Given who he was dealing with, it would have to be physical violence and there was a problem with that.
“I can’t afford to arrange a hard beating and be sent to Lady Knit,” Tristan quietly said. “I was insolent to her, she’ll make me pay for it.”
The captain raised his pistol, squeezed the trigger and blew another chunk of straw off.
“What a collection of mistakes you are,” Wen said, sounding almost admiring.
He took up his ramrod, pointed it Tristan’s way.
“You got fat, rat,” Wen said. “You got sloppy. The boy I met on the Dominion wouldn’t have blundered like this.”
Tristan only looked down, lips thinned. Only a fool argued with the truth.
“The one you tried to be, after Asphodel, wouldn’t have either,” Wen added. “Pick one, Tristan. Because trying to be both is about to get you killed.”
“Any practical advice?” he challenged.
“The Obscure Committee doesn’t give a shit about brigades,” Wen said. “You can break up any number of them, so long as you don’t damage the talent making them up. The students are the only resource on this island the Watch actually cares about.”
Which meant going on the offense, finding a way to dismantle or muzzle the Nineteenth before they could catch him. Tristan hesitated, then decided to risk it.
“The Nineteenth’s patron is called Quenmach Pale,” he said. “He’s Arthashastra Society. Do you know anything about him?”
“Just because I’m a Laurel I know every other Laurel on the island?” Wen snorted. “I’m not even diplomacy track, Tristan.”
The thief grimaced. Fair enough.
“Commander Quenmach Pale,” Wen then idly said.
He whipped back to see the large man smugly grinning.
“You do know about him,” Tristan accused.
“I know everything about everyone,” Wen Duan said without the slightest hint of irony. “Never doubt me. In this case, I can tell you that Commander Quen is one of the Garrison’s leading diplomats in Izcalli. He was pulled out of talks in the Grand Duchy of Huac suddenly to be reassigned here around the end of last year, and by ‘sheer coincidence’ was assigned as patron to the Acatl brat when she showed up.”
Tristan frowned.
“He’s a career diplomat?”
Wen nodded.
“And a formal advisor to the Conclave on the matter of warrior societies,” the large man added. “He’s a member of so many correspondence societies he supposedly hired a scribe just to keep track of the letters for him.”
Tristan’s eyes narrowed. Which meant Commander Quenmach had cultivated informants of his own. Which in turn might just mean the records he kept about his cabal that went beyond whatever their Watch papers stated – not that Tristan would turn down getting his hands on even those ones if he could. It was the same information Hage had just refused him, taken from the enemy’s own hand. Finally he had a plan of action.
“Any advice?” Tristan tried.
Wen looked him up and down.
“He’s seventy-two years old, but I’m pretty sure he could beat the shit of you,” the captain noted.
Ah. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time a grayhair laid him out.
“I’ll uh, keep that in mind,” Tristan said.
Wen sighed, then reached for a slip of paper inside his cloak. He passed it to Tristan, who flipped it and saw… an address?
“Is that what I think it is?” he asked.
“I don’t know, I never handed you anything,” Wen said.
He then sighed.
“You should, you know.”
Tristan cocked an eyebrow.
“Ask the Thirteenth,” Wen elaborated.
Tristan’s fingers clenched.
“They didn’t make me shoot that girl,” he quietly said.
It wasn’t that he was too proud to ask. He certainly intended to use Angharad as a deterrent until he could deliver on an actual plan. But the actual methods he’d need to use to deal with the Nineteenth? They weren’t something anyone else in the Thirteenth would smile at. There was a reason Song took his reports without asking too many details about how he’d learned things.
“You shot that girl because she drew on you,” Wen Duan bluntly said. “You then threw a tantrum, because you are less a man than a lively parade of fuckups, but you were only put in that position because Izel Coyac somehow thought he’d get away clean running out on a marriage with the House of Acatl. You want to know why I didn’t chew you out like Hage?”
The man smiled mirthlessly.
“Because Hage’s job is to make you into Krypteia,” he said, “while mine is to be patron to the Thirteenth. And it pains me to say it, Tristan, but this once you’re not the one who dragged a dead bird to the front door. You were, in fact, keeping your nose clean this year. Which is the reason I never handed you that paper.”
Tristan slowly nodded.
“Nobody made you poison that girl,” Wen Duan said, “but a month ago Yaotl Acatl didn’t know your name. Your being a beastly little shithead doesn’t wash that out, Abrascal. So don’t get too proud to collect on help, because Izel Coyac didn’t tip that vial into the girl’s mouth but he put you in that fucking pit with her just as much as the princess did.”

You too, I'm afraid, are missing the message for the words, here. Hage didn't tell Tristan to actually go by the official rules and blindly trust in a system that's known to fail. What he was getting at, was that more broadly speaking Tristan botched this by not using the appropriate tools at his disposal for the task. He acted like the cornered rat he was back in the Murk, instead of handling this like the Mask he is training to be.

Except when has the watch ever backed Tristan? They act like he should have trusted them to protect him, but it’s literally never happened that way. They were more than happy to let him be kidnapped, more than happy to let him deal with an openly hostile brigade, happy to let him defend himself when people tried to kill him, and only really intervened when he defends himself. When has the watch ever proven to be loyal to him? If I was Tristan I absolutely would have crush the problem that way because from history we know the watch would have done nothing when they came back to kill him. Not saying he was right to poison her, but Hage is full of shit telling Tristan to use the rules. Other brigades flaunt the rules constantly when attacking him

"until he got the watch back" this seems like an appropriate time to say "Vanessa's watch back" to remind both the character and audience of the source of the watch. Hage's reaction feels like it should be a mix of Abuela and Hage, would love to see more Abuela to get a better sense of the internal Mask conflict. I understand it's meant to be a controlled breaking with Hage/the Winnowers/the Krypteia, but that still seems weird and abrupt even with the time between chapters/books. The violin bringing back Tristan's father's memory is a great addition. Love the Wen and Mandisa interaction, though again parts of Wen's feedback seem more like it should be coming from Abuela. I really would like to see some conflict between how Abuela would like him to act, how Hage would like him to act, and how the 13th would like him to act. I also think that a bit more background on his conflict with Lady Knit and a reminder of the temptation of Fortuna's sacrifice to Gods would be a good addition to the conversation with Wen.

Lets be honest, they dont care about the girl the poison or what is right or wrong, they care it was public, from day one they tell them if someone betray the watch they will be killed by a mask and the one who tell tristan to trust the system almost kill him in a loyalty test after he was used as bait, if the lesson of hage was about consequenses it would have being a fine thing but to trust them, no, i call bull.
