Tovar joined because of her ambitions, and she herself played a game here. Not to mention, Tristan did execute a rational and effective plan, without risking other cabalists needlessly. The bet and Yaotl was just a theatre going on after. Still, I understand the anger, because you have to be angry at somebody after a loss. Still, it isn t one of those "watch-sanctioned-look-the-other-way" revenges, so Tristan can actually defend himself

So a few chapters ago, Angharad thinks that killing the briarid would pay for Cai Wen's resurection, and in this chapter, she lands the killing blow on it. Does this mean we won't be seeing Cai Wen any more? Or is her soul going to stick around until the next Skiritai graduation?

I really liked Tristan giving Izel a chance to handle the situation with Yaotl, and Izel coming through - as painful as it was for him. He wants to get away from the violence of his upbringing so badly, but when he'd exhausted all other available options (including offering his own fingers!), he set his principles aside so he could make up for his part in the current mess. I wonder how this will affect his feelings about Tristan going forward - this is now twice that Izel has had to resort to violence because someone close to him refused to do the smart thing and leave Tristan alone. Neither of those instances was Tristan's fault, but I could see it causing Izel some discomfort; maybe Tristan will eventually return the favor by agreeing to something that's riskier than necessary but avoids killing or harming people. It would also fit with Tristan's arc of realizing that he's not always the underdog now, and doesn't need to take the scorched earth option to survive.

There is something to the theory that Fortuna’s bond with Tristan might be an escape tunnel, if only Tristan embraces the long odds lifestyle enough to anchor his end.
