I think compared to the actual teachers (the marshal for example) it's a bit of a stretch to say any of the 13th are anything more than talented students in comparison. Super soldiers are an exaggeration.

Jack Curtis

I like this chapter because it gets at something that's been bugging me all book. At this point what exactly is the Watch providing for any of the Thirteenth? They're already super soldiers, the Scholomance boons are just icing. Song admires Cao but hadn't heard of Cao before coming to murder school, so once she thinks about it for a second she'll realize Cao is way inadequate a role model. Tristan feels a debt to Nerei and believes in the mission, but the Watch keeps throwing him into the fire to purge corruption in their own ranks instead of hunt evil. Angharad will take her oath seriously but the Watch isn't going to free her father. Izel is looking at life as a researcher and making a very sensible call given his values. They need each other for emotional and narrative reasons, but the Watch treats them like shit. Why stick around if the black cloaks don't actually do anything worth doing soon?

Something something pity is not a plan...

Aguido Horatio Davis

I do not think Maryam has quite thought through what leaving the Akelarre means; with her training not even half done, nowhere safe to do things like obscuration or even rest in a meadow and nobody to care for her the next time it goes pear shaped. All the Orels could do is make Maryam comfortable and see if she wakes up.

Lucy Severine

I love Maryam, she's great. Such a mess of a woman and I believe in her ability to grow and change and find a way through. Izel, you're the GOAT, that was a great framing for her.

Big I

I predict that Maryam will offer the services of herself and her skimmer to the Admiral, Old Stormy, to keep the new seven men out of bondage. And that she'll eventually settle on rising through the ranks of the Watch navy.

Atrum

Yeah, Maryam needs to realize that doing her best to become a powerful higher up in the Watch is the best chance she has to inflict real change. Abandoning it all to become a pirate fighting for her people will not help them all.

Markos El-Far

Maryam needs a touch of Yellow Earth in her. The calm, careful planning and patience fueled by rage and discipline. That woman has a chance of saving her people. Giving up the seven people is going to hurt her bad, but theres no helping it. They have nowhere to go even if they're “freed”.
