God, I was wondering how this chapter would shape up, and having an entire day wasted by a cocky signifier is more than worth it for that end. After 40 chapters, we finally see the brigade back together working on the same problem. Maryam, fresh from her ritual, just trouncing Deigo, and Song coming in after Ferranda just lost control of her brigade, something I imagine Song might have some advice with, considering Song had to salvage her own from even worse tensions. Also a pretty good show of how much signifiers change the playing field and how not having one can seriously be a major hole. We had the first example for the delve, but this second rate siginifier who can't match up to maryam at all was able to toy with the 13th and 31st until Maryam kicked him in his rear. Curious about the Nineteenth. If not in town or Lamb Hill, then I assume this means they went out on their own? I seriously wonder if Yoatl is dumb enough to try and attack the Lord of Teeth on her own. Things are progressing, and I suspect the Lord of Teeth may die a good amount sooner than the end of this story. Many threads are left, but I think we've gotten past the internal struggle portion, for the most part, and onto them focusing on the many, many problems they have to solve. Yoatl, Lord of Teeth, Morcant, Cao, Scholomance and it's minions, whatever fucking de Tovar decides to be a bitch about, and whatever is behind the greater plot of it all this book. Let's fucking go.

Ferranda *is* an infanzona. Tristan not hissing the moment he hears her name actually says a lot. Tristan lightly messing with her in many ways can be seen as him actually liking her enough to make fun of her like this. He'd never dare doing something like "Ferrando Villazar" to someone he sees as an enemy that might seriously hurt him. That said, yeah, Ferranda refusing to tell the other two members of the grief trio what is going on, is the most obvious sign that she ultimately knows she is not in the right. If her motivations are that justified and easy to defend, she should just tell the other two so they instantly will understand.

I love, love love how the 13th refuse to gracefully lose. This was a very heatless political sandbagging, and entirely solvable with bribes/favors traded to change the calculus of the situation. Everyone was being a good sport (the insults and compliments were just fun banter.) And then after a wasted half day Tristan goes 'right, this respectable stalemate has gone on long enough, time to make it personal' and gets Maryam who never in her life lets anything not be a personal insult (And I admire her deeply and dearly for it.) Other things I love: Tristian's continuing corruption of Angharad, guy is way way better at influencing her behavior and getting her to accept things then Fisher's blunt heavy handedness does. Also Angharad's 'fretful husband' comment reminding us that gender roles in Malan seem lighter then in real life, but reversed in a lot of ways. In things I find interesting, I find it odd that the other two island survivors of the 31st didn't even suspect that Isabel was shot by an ally. They probably would have accepted it, like Angharad claims she would have, if Ferranda admitted it soon after, but it would have probably lowered their trust in her for a time, but she traded trust in the moment for long term foundational trust, which seems to be a theme given what happened this chapter. Also interesting is that Ferranda did seem to put effort into cultivating the 13th, who were broadly appreciative of it, but Tristan was the one who seemed a bit more hostile and eager to mess with her, with the constantly using her name when introducing people. It feels like he never was fond of her or respected her the way he was of the other two. And Zeze both knew and tried (in his way) to cover up Tristan's revenge killing of Cozme, so it might be that Ferranda doesn't even have the full picture of what Tristan has been up to on the island.
