they did rob the 49th. Its a bit confusing, but song added a direct note in their vault + a copper coin while taking everything else

Jasus

I had feared that their team would become best friends so soon, so it is relieving to see that is not the case. Although I have to question the wisdom of not robbing the Forty-Ninth. The money is their lifeline and would complicate a lot of things for them if they did not have it. Maybe that would be escalating the conflict but they are already out for the blood of Tristan so cripling their operations is worth more than having the statisfaction of having slapped the King.

Best new character of this book, so far!

I love Luren. He's very zen

Hal Victorious

Luren and his lessons remind me of the sayings of Jōshū.

I find the Angharad-Maryam dynamic especially interesting as Peredur also suffered at the hand of Malan, and the wealth of Osian seems to be independent of the wealth of the Tredegar family entirely. So Maryam is angry at Angharad not because of the facts of the situation, but because of what they could be and what they represent to her.

I really like this chapter. I was afraid Maryam was going to get along with Angharad too easily, it wouldn't have made sense considering how she represents in her mind the people who colonized her country and enslaved her people. Each time Angharad gets to have some privilege, like money or recognition, Maryam is hit by the realization that all that has been built on Maryam's people's suffering. It doesn't help that Angharad comes off sometimes as condescending due to her prejudices. Maryam's hypocrite, considering how her father had slaves and is portrayed as fortuned, but I think when you're forced to be in a team with someone who has benefited from your colonization, you get a pass, at least for some chapters
