God I love the way you write.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

I think it's Maryam's mother's soul, shrouded in the tainted aether of her death and bound to Maryam by some rite known to the Izvorica.

Aguido Horatio Davis

Honestly, I gave it 60% that Song would lose her grip again and freak out at Maryam for DARING to do something horrible to clean up Song’s mess, the same as she did with Tristan.

TS

Not-Maryam theories ... It's the present day gloam-ghost formed from the brain/mind being occluded first. A redrawn recast fettered soul. The slight differences are how Maryam sees herself not as she is seen. The entity has agency (acts for its own needs and wishes) but does so from Maryims own experiences and learnings, but without a contemporary overlay. The entity has modelled itself after the person who lead Maryiam down the path of occluding the mind first. See, I don't have a clue and I love it ...

Gwennafran

A theory is that sworddances are what girls are taught with swords in Tianxi. And Kang doesn't have the imagination to figure Song learned actual swordfighting, when only men are supposed to know that.

Avery Cortell

My guess (from Song's reaction about them being ceremonial) is that he's either satisfied that her family is no longer rich and powerful enough to have their daughter learn something like that. Or that there's some secret to them that would make her a better fighter.

Scar_Knight

Also, four people is the minimum amount of people allowed in a brigade, so unless they feel confident poaching someone desperate enough to side with Tupoc, the need Angharad around to fill up a slot.

General Corteau

Love this chapter — finally seeing the manifestation of some of the potential of Maryam, Song is learning to finally see instead of merely being able to look at everything, and of course Tristan and Angharad have always continuously demonstrated their talent. We're starting to get the shape of what the Thirteenth could look like at their full potential.

Nicco merritt

Was the sword dances question a hint at an attack? Or him asking her if she was a capable swordswoman?

Colin Love

I really enjoyed this chapter. I had thought to mention my gratitude for scratching a long standing itch by dropping that sprinkling of lore. The Izvorica seem to be a very important people perhaps at a or the fulcrum between the old ruined world above and the present world below. Gloom & Gloam, night and albino characteristics, loss of a soul and perhaps an out of body or astral projection of a soul. Like all good mysteries a nagging question gone dormant and out of sight and mind is brought to the forefront at the crux of a crucial moment. In so doing more questions than answers are the end result. Battered and bloody Song Ren stands up taking the first steps and finding illuminated before her the beginnings of a path ahead.

Michael Blue

It’s cute that Song thinks she has a higher body count than Tristan. I was expecting Tristan to rescue her, but this was much better.

Borangehat

Song Ren chaos era. Excited for my girl to go absolutely apeshit.

I always pictured vesper as a series of giant caves below post-apocolyptic earth. But maybe the book is mistaken or exaggerating.

so assuming my guess in the other post is right, Maryam's mother died when she was young, before she was taught any of this. she was started down the path by brain-obscuration while young but then Malan took her family when she was young and she fled, so she lacks the education to know this is within her power. also I feel like Maryam gets hung up on the Approved Signs because they're the basics, and without mastering them she wouldn't feel confident enough to move onto more advanced techniques like what Not-Maryam pulled off.

Spencer

It seems like Maryam found a solution to full power, no control. Find a situation where she can go all out!

so I think that this "Not-Maryam" is related to Maryam but not her: my guess is she is Maryam's Biological Mother, and the Mother she was referring to was Maryam's Grandmother. This is based on how she looks VERY similar but slightly different (The skin was just as pale but she was taller, her eyes a cloudy blue instead of limpid. And there were some details about her face… A sharper nose, thicker brows) and from how Not-Maryam introduces herself: "The last princess of Volcesta,” Not-Maryam said. “I rode with the wintersworn, stood on the shore when we gave the river seven lords of Malan. I am the Keeper of Hooks, first and last of the Ninefold Nine.” (Presumably the Wintersworn are warriors, Ninefold Nine are signifiers and Keeper of Hooks is her Title/Role within the group) and we know from prior POV chapters that Maryam's mother resisted the Malan incursion/occupation to the end (and it is implied she is dead now). so I think what happened is Maryam's mother tied her soul to her daughter (as part of the pre-pubescent signifying rituals that saw Maryam obscure her brain) and followed her after death (probably living in the quarter of her brain that Captain Yue says amputating would allow for her signifying to stabilize). This is also why Maryam has such ease with the advanced mental signs, there is another being in her head assisting, but otherwise it fucks with her control. My best guess is that this practice allows a signifier more power then normal, hence why Maryam's Grasp is so high: both the baseline and upper limit are probably far stronger then normal My guess is that, because of how large the aether-well is on Vesper, when Maryam sleeps the Not-Maryam can actually come into being and take independent actions. Its why, during her first POV chapter back at the Rainsparrow Hotel, she woke up even more tired: part of her was exerting energy to allow Not-Maryam to maintain a presence. Its also why she has never run into Not-Maryam: it only appears when she's sleeping, at least until recently. I think that Maryam (likely with assistance from Captain Yue) has figured out how to actively manifest Not-Maryam. not enough to control her or anything, but enough to direct her in a sense, and send her to check on Song.

Mag1cM

Yes, how can the guy who might be a stable saint possibly match that.

Victor Cavalcanti

Whenever Angie and Maryam get a copy of "Your eldritch entity and you, a beginners guide to lovecraftian shenanigans", they're going to get crazy powerful. I wonder how Tristan and Song will keep up.

Avid_Appletree

Evil

Rune of Doom

From what we've seen so far, I'm pretty sure that Not-Maryam is not something Maryam has any conscious control over.

ppbrro

Or maybe another ancestor, and Maryam had to do the brain thing first otherwise they get posssesed or smth

Osiris

The 13th can survive Angrahad leaving if Maryam can bring out Not-Maryam in any consistent way. With that increased security, Angrahad’s personality is not worth keeping around in the squad.

Aurelian Ungureanu

Equator circumference is 24,901 miles. This world would be quite a few times bigger than Earth

mlengle

could be the soul of her dead mother, and the apparition looks differently because it's her mother's appearance, not Maryam's

Aurelian Ungureanu

Now I can root for Song, too.

Draken09

Fortuna. Hands down.

WaveySky

I've had the impression that Maryam was separated from her family when she was young. The way she talk about everything just feels that way to me. I think she wants to learn the signs because her people's magic culture is probably mostly dead. The signs are the only things she has to turn to. The interesting question is what is her long term goal?

Joe Rachman

Also considering that Maryam saw her mother do all of this stuff this begs a few questions. First, why wasn't she taught this? Or was she on some level but she's supressed this? Or perhaps she wasn't but the soul-thing is a bunch of scrapings put together by her mother and implanted with some knowledge to look after her? Second, if she knows what her people can do why get so hung up on the approved Signs TM? I get that in a Scholomance/Watch context she needs them but surely she'd know its not the be all and all? Is there something like some epic cultural cringe going on?

MouseThatJumps

Hundreds of thousands of miles? Either EE meant to write "hundreds OR thousands" or this world is HUGE.

Matthew Flowers

Her hatred of Tristan aid because she hates herself. They share too much in common.

Ed

not-Maryam or Fortuna, who is better queen?

Joe Rachman

Well Maryam is suddenly terrifying. Also the following ""If she was that worried about it,” Not-Maryam muttered, “she could have gone herself.”" This implies this free roaming soul thing (?) responds to Maryam's desires on some level. Also I imagine Kang will be disturbed to see 4 students disappear and Ren fine with no explanation... Until Tristan ruins him maybe.

Avery Cortell

Hot damn. Looks like Maryam has some kind of... second soul attached to her? Clearly a being linked to her somehow at least. Also yay, Song got there in the end! Now to see if she can start patching the holes.

dhighway61

Don't blame me, Song Ren. I voted for Kodos.

primus

Um Not-Maryam what the fuck

mhunterhoss

Ackshually, that was Not-Maryam

Machalt
