Colin Love

Those cold roiling winter storm clouds have parted for a moment letting the warm sun through to highlight quite bright silver linings.

Mario Morales

I suspect there's a good chance that Tristan's contract is not the type he suspects. I'm thinking something more like a caprice.

TS

Yeah, a few unexpected typos in this chapter.

TS

Yes, great symmetry. Fantastic! So very interesting.

Orion1024

I love this writing so much. Strong dialogs, logical characters, subtle yet hilarious humour (citric war crimes loooool)…. I am content

Aurelian Ungureanu

Wow, did not make that connection. That is great! Haha, Wen framed it as a robbery.

Aurelian Ungureanu

I loved seeing Tristan so clearly struggling with deeply rooted habits of bottling up and cutting out emotions he thinks are not useful ... making a strong effort to connect with Maryam.

Aurelian Ungureanu

"Did not see Song going all in with showing the details of her contract" - perhaps I should have phrased that better. I meant it was surprising to see her make such a big step in showing all the details of her contract. I expected her to take action in gaining Tristan's trust, but in a world where talking about one's contract is great tabboo and Song's white knuckled grip on that damn chisel, her making official papers about her contract (also sharing it with Wen) and giving copies to Tristan, a Mask and someone she doesn't like ... that is about as huge as Angharad making an oath to Tristan, if not more.

Joe Rachman

Loool good spot

Omri Solan

Fortuna's deal with Maryam was surprisingly fair. She was asked to wipe Tristan's smile, in a way that would be good for him, and in return she asked Maryam a boon with the same effects. Also, how awesome is this, that we are told that contracts are classified by their price, and in the same chapter Song tells us she doesn't know her price.

York

That's a really interesting idea! Normally signifiers can't have contracts, but maybe hers is with a god that shapes gloam on her behalf.

I was wondering what the robbbery Zenzele mentioned last week was. I never guessed that Wen left the hospital and just walked over and beat up Kang

Kel

This was so so good! It’s so refreshing to see people actually try to figure out their interpersonal problems! Especially with Maryam and Tristan (they are my favorites so I’m biased admittedly) - not letting that anger fester. Even knowing that the emotions you’re feeling are undeserved they still exist, and having that conversation was so important and so good. 💜💜💜

Gazarette

I'm talking about Maryam not Song

silvergazer31

I'm confused, what about her contract is left out?

silvergazer31

Ohhh, thats an interesting idea. A legacy passed down not through bloodlines but through an Order.

primus

No, she was just super desperate and agreed to anything without checking.

Avid_Appletree

In what way does she have him in checkmate?

Aurelian Ungureanu

Maryam mentions that Tristan and Song can walk in a room full of strangers and within an hour can find the levers to pull for half of them. It was only after reading this part that I realized it must be grating for Tristan who had to learn the hard way how to read a room, think about Song that she does the same with a big help from her contract. I remember the altercation with the 49th in the classroom where she was able to take snapshots of the situation and process them instantly, including everyones facial reactions and body language. While that is with help from her contract, Song shows great skill at interpreting all of that. Something to appreciate about her, but from Tristan's POV he couldn't know that. What a great way for things to make sense. I also love the airing of their relationship with Tristan being frank and openly saying they don't like each other, Song not denying. So good when things are in the open. Finally, I will jump in with what everyone else is saying - did not see Song going all in with showing Tristan the details of her contract. That, I think has the biggest impact since it is long-term and a main requirement for trust.

Gazarette

Does Maryam have a legacy contract? Is that what's going on with her?

MeYouIt

I like how we get to see the way Tristan "had every piece not useful broken off" this chapter, he cannot and will not put "the knife" down (except maybe for Maryam). Previously his behaviour was appropriate because he was surrounded by enemies, now when he has a conversation with a friend, he doesn't know how to act. Really good characterisation! Tftc!

Evri

so true

Nathan Fish

“Song Ren is* an enlisted officer" "“It is information that would be* relevant when passing judgment," “He was savagely beaten and right his leg broken in nine different places.” -> “He was savagely beaten and his* right* leg broken in nine different places.”? "which simply happens to lead their contractor into* situations that serve as prayer to them.” “But what you do_want is to get rid of the troubles dogging your step, so I prepared this for you.” "What* is this?"* Tristan asked. "And getting rid of his hunters would make it much_easier to find another brigade."

Michael Blue

Wen.

joie01

CAPTAIN WEN DUAN OH MY GOD i love this man with every fibre of my being

Thien Dinh

Thanks for the chapter

Etin Obaseki

Absolutely love Wen as a character. He’s grown on me so much since we left the Dominion.

Machalt

Tristan doesn't even know Song has him in checkmate yet, and here's hoping when he figures it out he'll have enough respect for it he stays on.

Dominic Corbin

What I love about your writing EE is that the twists are so very logical yet still surprising. Song's pulling the 13th back together but not in a way I expected. Wonderful.

Andrew Duan

Damn fine work song. To be honest, I didn’t think she had it in her

Joe Rachman

Damn Wen just keeps going harder... I think he may now be my favourite character. Also Song is taking a pretty bold and interesting gamble, but she's always had a streak of risk taking under the rest of it. Also Angharad has a boon contract which is intresting. I suppose Song's contract is then either caprice or boon? Either way I hope Luren's price will be some really spectacular boon when its revealed...
