Idk if this was answered or not. But could it be that the experiments that Tristan’s family get caught up in were trying to make stable or sane Saints? Maybe like Saints that can turn back human whenever they want?

Poop McScoop

Could be the bishop or a servant in some form. I like the idea of a demon and a god on Tristan's shoulder.

Tarmandan

Because Song already has experienced character growth. With Angie so far it has all been shallow character growth, merely expanding her experience but along the grooves of her world view. It is being cemented that she is intelligent, but unable to throw off the constraints of her thinking and never thinking too deep or far ahead. Which itself is a hilarious contrast to her contract being literal future vision (side note: Tristan's contract is about manipulating luck when he hates leaving things up to chance). Mind you, Song's growth did not come from nothing, she had been worn down her entire life and then was faced with failure of what she had been set up her entire life to accomplish. Angie on the other hand only recently suffered any real setbacks in life and so because her worldview and outlook on everything only ever got challenged in ways she could dismiss as exceptions to the presumed norm of her neat construct of how the world works we are currently seeing conflicts that are unresolvable within her outlook being stacked up. Her father or her Uncle. Her oath to the watch or her promise to retrieve the forge. And also mistakes are being accumulated, instances where she herself did not act on how the world should function if you look closer. Instances that, if shoved into the crack forming in her world view by the unresolvable conflicts, she will no longer be able to ignore. Presuming Song shot Isabella and not checking the other option being the most recent and one of the most prominent. Ignoring in the first place the fact that Isabella, if she did use mind control, was the first to attack an ally in the first place. And so many small assumtions where she assumed the first option that neatly fit her world view. All oportunities to arise in lenghty discussion about what happened at the dominion with Isabella when her perceived honor forces her to talk about it again with Song and this time she will realise that she was the one who did not trust and acted hasty but now won't be trusted to not act hasty. The chapter when Angie no longer can escape facing her own flaws and will at least have to ackowledge that they are objectively FLAWS and not just quirks of her personality will be an absolute banger

We all agree Tristan, Tupac, and Wen are all Wonderfully Terrible

Hal Victorious

A smart paladin whose particular interpretation of their oath (worked through with their DM, of course) can be very fun. It just has to allow for enough wiggle room for fun subversion while being binding enough to give you those “unfortunately, this I actually have to do” moments that make paladins a great motivating vehicle for a party.

Dont forget the casual racism.

Avid_Appletree

If it is a busted one I doubt that they would put much effort i to saving Anghard her father.

Dominic Corbin

Angharad is an excellent character and I love reading her sections. Same for Tristan, Song, and Maryam. Everyone is wonderful (and terrible) in their own ways, and I am having a great time with them!

General Corteau

I was assuming it was some sort of god

Andrew Duan

@Aguido Horatio Davis Tristan is a spook though. It’s like asking the FBI to help you assassinate the president on behalf of the CIA. They might do it, but they’re job is also to find people like you and hand them in so it’s very risky. The Kryptera has been built up like the military police/Gestapo of the watch. Nobody wants to cross them

Andrew Duan

I think he just like to eat lol. Stress eater maybe? Lots of that to go around

Andrew Duan

How is it that I’ve come to like Song more than Ang. I guess there isn’t a whole of of fighting going on to show her strengths, but the weaknesses, the inability to effectively politick, the short sightedness, and pride and the skirt chasing has really been on full display this book. This is why I never play paladins in DND.

York

RIGHT?!!! This is the first other living thing besides protagonists (and plants) to show up there. How and why did it come to be there?!

Jaz Hare

Chekhov's Gun and all that.

Ed

it's nerei, i am sure

Qahlz

Yeah, seemed like a very obvious bit of foreshadowing to me.

silvergazer31

I agree that she is never actively malicious, but at a certain point her unwillingness to consider that she might be wrong becomes its own sort of ill will. She has had multiple experiences where her beliefs about Malani honor and "worthiness" are directly proven to be incorrect, to the point that Zenzale told her point-blank about the corruption among the highest echelons, and she didn't so much as blink. Your points above are true, her family is dead, and its fresher then Maryam/Tristan, plus she's being blackmailed. But that only justifies her selfishness, not her other flaws. Those flaws, issues and struggles are what make her compelling/interesting as a character. I have absolutely no problems with her being in the story, all the focus she gets, or anything of the sort. I genuinely enjoy reading her parts and seeing her side of things. But I don't like her as a person.

Borangehat

Angharad, you fucking dolt. You put yourself on the CIA's leash and then ask them to loosen the collar because it chafes?

windoverwaves

Anyone else thought that bird might be important later?

Ryu

Really love the way how Song’s character has developed, it has not been mentioned enough. Oh, and I can’t wait see more of Cressida and her cabal

MapForge

I think Angie‘s story arc is great, and it’s the toughest to accomplish atm.

Poop McScoop

She could join eventually. There are six silhouettes in the picture and six plaques. Of the silhouettes, one is male, probably Expendable, and one is female. I think they need a tinker more, but we'll see.

Joe Rachman

She's also a teenager taught, in Tristan's words, to be mannerly and sword people with very little other experience - and she's still dealing with nearly her whole family being murdered. I can cut some slack on being self-absorbed, especially since its mainly set up for character development

Cosimo Yap

Angharad's deal was to trade in an Infernal Forge for her father... was it ever mentioned if it had to be a working one?

s476

She is the very hight of judging others by their actions alone while justifying herself by intentions and circumstances though

PoiDess

I have long since lost any sympathy for Angharad and her blinders. Girl needs a rude awakening and massive attitude adjustment.

Evri

There’s been no indication he has one. If Song can see a contract, she usually mentions it and she has never mentioned Wen having a contract.

Aguido Horatio Davis

Song would like her friend back, and as it happens there is an issue that a thief, a rogue Navigator, and a Ren with nothing to lose could help with.

Markos El-Far

You scratch my back, I scratch yours. Angharad and the rest of the 13th are diving back into the Witching Hour soon.

Big I

I tolerate her when she's trying to stab someone. Otherwise she's the type of character they invented a "skip" key for in video games.

Joe Rachman

I didn't think he had one?

Michael Blue

This chapter has me wondering if Wen’s contract is somehow food related

Joe Rachman

Also people could be a bit more tolerant of Angharad. She grates at times but is a) never malicious and b) currently being blackmailed by servants of a Queen she was raised since birth to reverse with her father's life as a bargaining chip...

Joe Rachman

She might still become the third student which could cool her temper

MouseThatJumps

Looks like EE heard our prayers and added Cressida's cabal to the field trip. Looking forward to her next interaction with Tristan.

Joe Rachman

Nice solid chapter - I like the use of relative downtime like this to establish relations and the next steps
