Jasus

"His goddess showed no such restraint, the red-dressed beauty guffawing so strongly she almost fell to her feet and had to catch herself on the bench." Yes I love these little sentences with Fortuna trolling Tristan.

Norwegia

Starting to feel like the mask from the 19th left the chimney unguarded so Tristan would overhear and have a chance to do something

George R

Thanks for the chapter

Tristan A

I think it's less of class/power as much as Tristan lacks faith in people in general. It's not that he views nobles, wealthy people, etc as inherently bad, rather everybody is bad and those aforementioned people just have more power to do bad things. That is my opinion at least.

Tristan A

Same...and not just because we share the same name....definitely not.

Tristan A

Song and Tristan????? I mean I don't disagree, but you don't ship Tristan and Maryam?? On a similar note, EE is one of the few authors that makes me excited for romance. They do it so well, specifically because they are just amazing at building characters in a way that makes every aspect of them interesting. In many other stories I end up focused on particular aspects of characters and therefore don't really care or want to see all the intricacies of their life. But EE's characters are just *chefs kiss*

Skeys13

HE SHOULD JOIN THE 13TH!!!

COR

Holy shit, good god. This was the most fantastic chapter yet. Better than anything I can recall from APGTE The depths revealed of each character individually, the relationship between them. I keep a little txt file of neat/cool/or funny quotes from my favourite books that I go back to reminisce, I gave up on pulling any one thing from this chapter, as every other paragraph is pure gold. Well done sir, well fucking DONE! WOO~

Lewis

Just cheer on the coup then, and the Brigadier who keeps not mentioning it. "If he were not king of Asphodel..."

dhighway61

This might be my favorite chapter of Pale Lights so far. Fantastic.

TheLunaticCo

Allegedly!

Skeys13

I really do love his perspective on class/power as a whole. It’s similarly critical in a lot of ways to Songs perspective of monarchies.

Skeys13

I predict you’re right but I’m really really hoping Evander finds a way to win her over to his side 😂

Berswoon

Chapter 23: “Genuine authority flows from the font of trust,” he said, quoting someone. “Men can be bullied or bought, but they will never achieve what they would under someone they believe deserves to hold command over them.” “And how do I get there?” she pressed. He laughed. “Am I the Stripe, or you?” Wen asked. “Figure it out, Song. Or dissolve your brigade and let them go under someone who will.” It took 28 chapters, but she figured it out :”) so proud of my girl Song!!!

celerity

“There goes my daily reminder of the virtues of humility.” Ohoho, you thought getting flipped into the dirt was your serving of humble pie for today? Get outmaneuvered into trusting Song by her being unflinchingly ride-or-die for you!

Joe Rachman

I feel Maryam would be crushingly unsympathetic towards Evander if he tried to get sympathy.

Joel Tone

> Because virtue’s never about virtue, it is about the power to allocate vice

Joel Tone

Wow

ppbrro

Hahahah now im picturing Wen shouting that when he went and broke that professor leg

Lewis

Also this 'send Maryam to talk to Evander' plan has a very high chance of turning into 'Evander asking Maryam about his crush,' which, I am so ready for the many hilarious ways that can go. Sorry about the sad puppy eyes you may be about to recieve, Maryam.

Lewis

I love this entire chapter, for the trust developing, for the hilarious and accurate depiction of so-ace Tristan giving love advice, and also for the shadow of "They hunt no other in the Thirteenth" as an interesting future conflict/bond between Tristant and Angharad, who very much *is* and *will be* hunted by those who killed her family and for her contract, and who hasn't told the cabal anything about any of it. By the time everyone trusts each other like Tristan and Song now trust each other, the cabal will be ready for some of those great deeds indeed.

MAS

This conversation was a long time coming, and it arrived somewhat unexpectedly. I hope Tristan’s willingness to extend trust will be tested, and I hope that he will be rewarded with growth. The slow galvanization of the brigade, and their individual realizations that they can trust almost no one else has been really fascinating to read. After the first book when the POVs doubled I was lamenting less Tristan chapters. I was wrong. All four are equally nuanced and surprising. Such great writing.

AllenR

This. Well done, EE.

StrollingEye

I selected the text underneath the closing line, just to be sure there was not a hidden line somewhere. I'm relieved to say, there is not. It's clean space. I'd hate to see a twisty plot surface after that satisfying conversation.

Ryu

Hear hear.

MeYouIt

Tftc! I fucking love the bond that is developing between Tristan and Song.

The Stargazer

As per usual, the Thirteenths is surrounded by lethal plots, conspiracies, and enemies. Fun times! Will the island be still standing by the end of the arc, I wonder? Amazing chapter, fantastic relationship development!

Alex

These 2 are arguably perfect for each other. As friends/lovers/co-workers/ or whatever, it’s like they would work well no matter what. They are officially the only time I’ve ever actually shipped characters together

Ryu

Oh, loved how Song handled that conversation. What a chapter, definitely one of my favourite.

Joe Rachman

The best bit is when he shouts "IT'S WENIN TIME" and wened all over some guys

Draken09

When is Wen time?

awakeatdawn

fantastic

Joe Rachman

Tbh going forward I think we might increasingly see Song-Tristan and Angharad-Maryam as pairings in the Cabal work. The former are the planner, schemers, and politickers and the latter two make very good muscle covering physical and aetheric threats respectively.

Sean Boyd

Amazing chapter. Glad to see Song and Tristan working together so smoothly.

Machalt

This scene has me feeling a lot of emotions that I don't have the words for.

ppbrro

Omg i love them

Shameful

Tristan: Someone made a pass at you? I can kill him for you. Also Tristan: Hey people are trying to kidnap me again. What do you mean you're willing to kill them for me?

StrollingEye

Oh, what a scene. Tristan. My favourite character.

Joe Rachman

Tristan also has a fascinatingly measured radicalism. Utter scepticism of power and anything he sees as it's instrument, but without much of a sense of righteous indignation to it.

Joe Rachman

Aha Song rises to the occasion pushing Tristan to actually take help from his allies. Extremely satisfying.

Mag1cM

Always impressive when it's a full chapter of two people just having a conversation and it's still an incredibly fun read.

Aguido Horatio Davis

No Wen?

Pride

I’m so glad Song got Tristan to open up. The character development for the entire 13th is fantastic!
