Runaway_Cactuar

I disagree. Book 1 Angie's libido actively got her in trouble. In this instance, it helped complete her objectives.

Gideon

These are themed after Greeks, after all. It's lore accurate.

Mistfate

Uewh, a warning would have been nice.

Gwennafran

It's notably not every character. Much to Angharad's dislike at the Malani noble party where none of the pretty noble girls seemed interested in dating her. A thing to keep in mind is that the majority of women that have heavily flirted with Angharad have been trying to use her in some form or another. Isabel wanted a bodyguard. Yaretzi wanted to kill her for the reward. Imani wanted Angharad to be her pawn in getting a Infernal Press and access to the rest of Thirteenth. Penelope seemingly just want a one-night stand to treat her midlife crisis. Reliving her lost teenage years (all the things Penelope wants to do are things she was interested in at age 17). By far one of the most tame situations so far. On the other end of the spectrum, Cleon probably never would have dared asking Angharad to visit his estate, had she not heavily been working him towards that for two consecutive parties.

Ed

one would expect the contrary in a dark, and tragic medieval-world like vesper, especially with 18th century-medical interventions and slave trading.

primus

Not quite free. It does hurt to use too much, and she did start bleeding out of her eyes that one time.

awakeatdawn

it's also worth noting that angharad is in incredibly good health and super fit, so her sex drive is probably just really healthy

ohjeezohno

the keys to the safe potentially containing one of her mission objectives were literally in Penelope's cleavage!! LET HER HAVE THIS ONE

Kazz

I think it's pretty clear that she's conventionally speaking, hot, plus a high level warrior. In a post-feminist world, its hardly a surprise that both genders find her attractive.

Mark W

And that's just the women. Lord Menander has celebrated his '45th' birthday about seven times. This cult of Golden Ram has quite a lot of nobles trying to chase youth in one fashion or another.

Gwennafran

She's 35. Cleon was confirmed 17 this chapter. He just looks 15. Looking younger seems to run in the family.

Gwennafran

Third, actually. Penelope Kirtis is on her sixth marriage to a very young man. (she's the one with the contract) Lady Dougas was roaming around the young men Cleon hangs out with. And Penelope Eirenos goes for her teen son's potential marriage prospects. I thought I had made a mistake when I realized I had cougar next to both Kirtis and Dougas in my art overview, but nope...

Alex

Angy being horny all the time is fine. I find it quite annoying but it’s ok. However having every single person she comes across instantly be attracted to her is just irritating and to me seems like it’s happened enough time that it’s crossed from believable to boring

Darryl Greensill

She’d be 32 or 33, if she was pregnant at 17 and her son is 15. Plenty of 33 year olds still look 20-something!

Darryl Greensill

Song also has the hots for Angharad’s uncle!

Blind

I mean its pretty easy to be insulted when the person you invite over sneaks around to bang your parent, lets not get caught up in the patriarchy or intentions here.

Blind

I was thinking Angie was a very James Bond character, getting ensnared by femme fatales and seducing jaded women for information.

Clarissa Pinkas

Milf Hunter Angharad sounds like a bloodborne boss title

MoEl

She doesnt have one Her deal with the fisher is that she gets free use of the contract untill she gets her vengence then she must accomplich a task for the fisher most likely freeing him

mlengle

Careful Angharad would glimpse before sex, not after. So much to learn...

Mark W

Upon reflection, this is the second noble older lady who seduces teenage lovers casually on this investigation. Wonder if there's some thematic connection or cultural trend going on here. The first one had some contract about disgust or some such thing, she was at the party with the assassination attempt. Wonder if Mommy here has a contract or boon that Angharad would have no special insight into figuring out.

Dominic Corbin

That is an interesting wrinkle. Cleon has no love for Apollonia Floros's behavior when handing over her regency, thinks Evander did well to control the chaos that resulted, and seems to have no ties to the growing uprising. A neutral candidate no one has issues with to be restored to throne by the cult after the "unpleasantness" perhaps?

Dominic Corbin

Right! The worst this encounter can go is a scandal in the country estates, and Cleon publicly snubs Angharad at the Lord Rector's court with some various salacious rumors. She basically got all the official spying done on her first day, so unless the servant's talk gets out of hand (and I'd expect Lady Penelope to have prepared for that, given the rest of the setup she had going) I'd say things are going pretty well for Angharad on this outing.

Dominic Corbin

I like Angharad. I think she's an interesting and fun character. As MouseThatJumps points out there's a lot of Angharad bashing bashing here, so my first instinct was to jump in, and say something along the lines of "She's nice and sees servants too!" I took quite some time to think about it however, and I do thank you Rune of Doom for your comment. I set aside my own bias in favor of Angharad, and come to much the same point of view that Gwennafran well elaborates above. Angharad has many flaws, one of which is she dismisses people who are not on her "level" (socially, martially). She'll notice the servants, but only to see how well cared for they are by their lord who gains or loses honor in her eyes thus. MouseThatJumps makes a good point as well, that Angharad's attention was too consumed with Lady Penelope, and trying to hide it, to notice anyone else.

Dominic Corbin

@Rune I didn't consider it before you said it, but I think you have hit it on the head. We've very recently been introduced to how you kill gods, and the Fisher IS imprisoned. The Malani queen is trying to starve it to death. The only question is does the queen know the Fisher is contracted to Angharad or her father? We've had somewhat conflicting motives for why Angharad's home was attacked, including the queen's. Knowledge of a forbidden contractor or two would qualify. I think Angharad has always low-key feared that her forbidden contract was the root of the attack, but it has seemed more likely it was something do with her father. The question always being was it just politics or the connection to the Fisher.

MouseThatJumps

It's directly implied that Angharad didn't notice the servant because she was thirsting too hard over Cleon's mom. I get we like to criticize Angie here but this one has a more charitable explanation than "she doesn't even see people she considers beneath her".

MapForge

Oh by the way, why have no one commented on the documents in the Safe indicating that our poor Hunter-Boy has most likely a claim to the title of Rector, by having his ancestor hooking up with the former ruling family?

MapForge

I think the whole situation was fun and in-character. There are near no sexual scenes in this book and I think it’s tastefully written. If I recall some other books I started to read on RR 🤣 tjis could have been a lot different instead and than I could relate to annoyance. But well, there are still Song Ren and our Rector on Shipping mode.

Gwennafran

I suspect it's both. Angharad doesn't seem to notice attractiveness on people she considers beneath her. There's various weird rules to this, meaning the watchwoman with the big upper arms she trained with on the boat to Scholomance qualified as an equal to Angharad. I guess only Angharad knows just how those rules work. Part of this is upbringing and class. But I suspect a lot of it also is about protection. Both protection of Angharad. But also protection of whatever maid her eyes might otherwise catch. Book 1 had several examples of how bad things goes if you as a noble person falls in love with someone not noble. And none of them were happy. Angharad is not just protecting herself. But yeah, I think Angharad unconsciously has trained herself not to even consider servants as potential sexual partners.

Gwennafran

I suspect part of the reason Cleon is so awkward around girls is that he has to match insult with insult. Which probably can turn bad fast while trying to flirt. Angharad tends to be extremely polite around new people, which in Cleon's case worked to her advantage.

Webwoven

Yeah, this is honestly not near as bad as book 1 Angie. And by “bad” I mean from an in-character safety perspective, not a meta textual enjoyment perspective.

Lucy Severine

GOOD GIRL ANGIE YOU GET IT GIRL Also great job on the spying part. But mainly the sex. WOO

Dominic Corbin

Or she's incredibly obvious in her attraction, and the youngish bisexual mom of her host came onto her? Sure she could have turned down the sex, but most male characters would seem quite prudish for doing so. Plus her ulterior motives.

WaveySky

Angharad probably should have played out the future sight confrontation.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

That's definitely not it.

Jasus

Angharad keep it in your pants for one just for 1 minute!! It is getting reeeaaallly annoying.

Joe Rachman

It's Imp she's infiltrated another universe via the portals. Next she'll be in this one standing behind you.

Emmet Mackle

She doesn't pay a price every time she uses her contract. Her contract is a 'boon contract' where the price was an oath to free the Fisher from its prison.

EndlessTurtle

You're giving me a paranoia

Darryl Greensill

He doesn’t seem to be a jerk. Maybe there’s something in the system that matches contracts with people who aren’t inclined to exploit them, eg Angharad not being a sociopathic sadist like Coil in Worm, and Tupoc not being particularly self-sacrificing

OtherPlayers

It would only work if he intended to hurt one of them though, which since he didn’t do I’m guessing he doesn’t want to.

Darryl Greensill

The price might be onerous. I can’t remember what her price even is, can you?

Peter Koev

Angharad doing spywork the only way she can - going full James Bond.

Darryl Greensill

Cleon’s mom has got it going on, she’s all that I want, I’ve been waiting so long

Darryl Greensill

Depends how patriarchal the society is, and EE’s worlds are very egalitarian. Also, it was obviously consensual! Also the contract seems to imply actual intended insult, not imagined insult for something that has nothing to do with the contractor. And Cleon seems like a humble and sensible person.

aquaeus

Penelope looking way younger than she should is mighty suspicious given the cult Angharad is supposed to be hunting

aquaeus

That’s a spooky idea

Darryl Greensill

Or alternatively, would never make a pass at someone she felt wasn’t in a position to freely accept or refuse

Aleksandr Sergeev

So, what are the chances that a young man, fascinated with a girl, would spy on her using a contract like that? And isn't it an insult, to fuck someone's mom?

Joe Rachman

Interesting blank space near the top of the the chapter. I'm increasingly convinced there's going to be a reveal and we'll have to reread all the chapters for the gaps that get filled in

Rune of Doom

I like how Penelope thinks Angharad ignored the maid out of restraint, when it's really just that Angharad can't be bothered to notice servants.

Rune of Doom

I've been assuming that the ban on precognitive contracts is specifically targeted at The Fisher.

andrew marturano

My bet is the high queen ordered the purge because she wants a monopoly on future telling

sharikak 54

“Lord Cleon Eirenos was contracted to a god called the Odyssean, who had offered him the power to walk unseen and unheard in the dark so long as he did so with the intention to spill blood. A useful talent for a huntsman, and though it would also serve for an assassin the noble seemed rather young for such things. No older than fifteen, Song would guess. His god must have a taste for chaos, as the price demanded was to always return insult with insult.” -Chapter 43

joie01

the milf chapter has been added to the holy book

Dominic Corbin

See Angharad? That's how you use a precognitive contract! Now you just need to use it on conversations, and you a well rounded terror. I have to check if Maryam tested how long a vision can last...

Darryl Greensill

Angharad is honestly my favourite. Her character development is great.

Darryl Greensill

Wasted on our horny paladin, that’s for sure! Someone with higher Int and lower morals would be ruling a city-state by now. No wonder the Malani forbid precognitive contracts!

Mark W

Boy, is this going to blow up in her face. I fucking knew that as soon as those paragraphs of thirst-descriptions at the start showed up Angharad was gonna fuck up, or fuck, or both. One non-lewd characterization point I noticed was that Angharad sometimes gets really ranty about minor petty things is really funny. Her most explicit and indulgent fantasies about killing Tupoc was about him branch-whipping her boob, and her reputation getting exaggerated into silliness gets her really really steamed. Meanwhile actual life-and-death conflicts are measured and weighed almost dispassionately compared to how she seethes about this much more minor issues. It's funny, but I know people the same way that only 'let' themselves get worked up about things that aren't a big deal.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

Ok I'll be honest, this went a lot better than I anticipated. I kinda expected the guy with a contract requiring him to "always return insult with insult" to take Angharad's stark refusal as an insult...

Aguido Horatio Davis

That contract seems more and more useful every day.

Machalt

Maryam definitely didn't teach Angharad the trick she used on Penelope, which is surely the MVP here

Machalt

Yes this was clearly just Angharad's plan the whole time, definitely not a spur of the moment idea she stumbled into. Jokes aside, I do think Angharad deserved a win at some point, considering how often she's gotten the narrative kick lately. Even if she's still my least favorite of the Thirteenth

Matthew Flowers

The brute can espionage. Also seduce. She owes Maryam a lot

Jacob Shpiece

Angharad will beat you with a blade and then fuck your mom to make sure it sticks.

Musclerelaxant
