Daniel Whiteford

Yeah but he could die without being a major loss. In other words he was expendable

Daniel Whiteford

Nerei. We don’t know what that means but she’s an ancient shapeshifting monster who terrifies people that kill gods and work with demons so probably nothing nice/

Daniel Whiteford

Is it? He did exactly what you’re meant to do when there might be a cult or God he hired the Watch. Both factions that opposed him have shattered their own power base and are complicit in breaking the Iscariot Accords.

Moonwatcher13

Political marriages, because that is what such a marriage would be, have survived larger age gaps than that. also some people are into that shit, so who knows?

PoiDess

I bet there’s some peiling society bounty out there specifically for dead god corpse bits they could probably cash in

PoiDess

Isn’t she like… at least twice his age

Christ's Twin

He took it from a corpse :D

Pteromys Momonga

I had been thinking after I read the chapter that Cleon is going to be kind of a big deal now - he had a pivotal role in defeating the Newborn, and is now contracted with Asphodel's patron deity. Hopefully he's learned from his recent experience and won't let anyone manipulate him into trying to take the throne; I wonder if Evander (if he stays Rector) could give Cleon some kind of position like "Defender of Asphodel," so he'll be thematically connected to the throne; that might avoid the political and spiritual imbalance of having Oduromai more connected to a random noble than to the ruler.

Ranger Science

Fortuna has literally taken the long odds, betting on Tristan.

Joe Rachman

Very first chapter "“I am the last of the fifty servants of the Changing King, eater of his name,” Abuela replied. “For this men came to call me Nerei Name-Eater, crowning me heresiarch.""

Dominic Corbin

Who's a heresiarch? Nerei? Hage? Where was this written? I don't remember anything like that

Mark W

. . .So does Cleon Eirenos know that Angharad fucked his mom? (Or, maybe, that his mom fucked Angharad). I think that's one secret that hasn't come out yet, and considering he saved the day and helped revive his god, might be a person of importance when the dust settles. Angharad might do well to grab the fastest ship she can and head back to school before the hangover wears off. Maryam and Song would be onboard with that plan, and Tristan is not going to object to GTFO of there.

TheLunaticCo

*After putting on his stolen tricorn

Ed

tristan is just the best here, the bow to the rebels like he is a magician making a trick reminds me a lot of the lord of mysteries but the best line was to maryam, “The world’s ending, so where else would I be?”. the best of the best.

sapassde .

Where is the Eleventh Brigade I wonder? I remember something being said of Imani (though I forget the specifics right now) but what about the rest of the crew who aren't trying to betray the Watch for the Malani empire? Two of the groups of Scholomance here being lead or entirely motivated by traitors makes me appreciate Tupoc's dedication to the cause more.

Severin Schramm

I love the very subtle callback to the first chapter of Angharad: „And even as death was aimed at him in a streak of gold over Cleon’s shoulder, a musket and a furious face, the thief stumbled backward. His back hit the dirt and he was but a heartbeat away from the end but he raised his hands and laughed. “I am unarmed,” he said.“ And then we learned it was Gule who hesitated due to Malani honor shenanigans. Amazing chapter overall! Tristans Run was written so beautifully!

Keyen Keyen

Fortuna, the blond girl with insane luck powers, tasked with an impossible task, moving through an entire bunker filled with robots armed to the teeth. Luck powers activate, large amount of misfiring and friendly fire happening, up to the very end where she need to be rescued.

Aguido Horatio Davis

Very

Clément Lanteigne

At some point I was expecting Fortuna to take the debt for Tristan.

Poop McScoop

Like Lady Luck in Discworld, people are constantly praying to her even if she has no temples.

Poop McScoop

I could see them getting married. The forces that backed the cults are still out there. Married to a royalist that he respects and with the creation of a parliament to quell merchant unrest. It's a smart move and Evander is very smart.

Teague

What are you talking about ?

sapassde .

He can always learn to put on better disguises, his wallet will cry and Hage will be happy to provide resources.

Colin Love

Moving

Nathan Fish

Amazing chapter! “That’s s/now/not what it’s meant for.” “O Lady of s/Longs/Long Odds,”

Keyen Keyen

Funnily enough, I got big flashbacks from The Perfect Run where you have the near exact same scene with the near same character haha.

Mmaze

On the other hand, he's gonna get SO much better at card games

Jacob Burton-Edwards

Zero chance the moment that created her was the founding of an empire. Maryam said it herself in the public chapter for today: Empire is a disease. And Fortuna may be mad and made of bad habits, but she isn't sick. Or self-contradictory, as empires always are. Besides, if she were a god of empire her contract wouldn't snap back harder when Tristan tried to hurt someone with it. Hurting people is Tuesday, and also every other day, for the kind of people who found empires. I could buy that she was the goddess born from the destruction of an empire, though. Someone looking at the impenetrable edifice of pain and sacrifice that was the First Empire and deciding it had to be torn down, no matter the odds, is how you make a being like her.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

Aroace harem protag is a fuckin' vibe.

Persephone

Gods, I teared up at when Tristan took Maryam's hand and waited for the end with her.

Calico

if we pretend enough just maybe

Runaway_Cactuar

I love how offended he is at being called one. The man takes professional pride in thievery and he will not tolerated hacks~

minuter

It's going to wreck havok on his anonymity. On Scholomanca and as a mask in general. It's hard to be a spy when you look like a protagonist.

minuter

Few are going to offer the woman the cult tried to crown as the alternative to the man who almost didn't manage to stop the annihilation of Asphodel. All anyone is going to see is that when the cult tried to overthrow the Lord Rector, his Lictors fought knowing Evander had escaped them.

Moonwatcher13

I do wonder what happens to Evander and Floros, assuming Evander survived the chaos of the Newborn. Arguably, this is all his fault, or at the very least he failed to stop the mess. Without Floros's backstabbing of the cult at every turn and timely intervention, the day would have been lost several times over by now. I can't see this ending in any way but her back in charge, for good this time.

TheLunaticCo

So, does Tristan have some literally golden hair now? That will be a pain to trim, but quite profitable!

Kristians Draguns

I just had so much fun reading the Epilogue chapter of the last book after reading this. There is so much foreshadowing that I must truly admire the author for all this. So we know the Cerdans tried to create a stable Saint, maybe they succeeded at that with Tristan somehow. They sure seem dedicated to kidnap him to take him to their secure research island. Also, the Office of Opposition is mentioned there, which I had completely forgotten. Not to mention the Obscure Committee's decision to send Angharad's cabal to a quiet and out-of-sight first test to curb the conflict with one of Sacromonte's Six. This will likely have blown up in their faces, hehe. Can't wait to read more! I am grateful to be supporting such an epic author <3

Pride

Not only did Tristan figure out the proper use for his contract, he also actually managed to hit someone with his gun. Tristan’s getting all the upgrades this chapter.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

So first, obviously, fucking incredible chapter. Not possible to say that enough. Second, this means there are at least three potential precognitives in thr 13th Brigade. Angharad obviously, Tristan going sicko-mode could see all his deaths coming and dodge them, and we've been told Gloam users can fuck with time. There's no evidence yet that Song, the woman whose contract's full description is "I see the truth" can see the future, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what Luren keeps poking her over.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

"Killing that ancient nameless death god wasn't even their contract! They just did it anyway, without getting paid, because they're all hypercompetent lunatics who can't chill out for even one second!"

sarvashaktimaan

My guess for a while has been that Fortuna was born from someone choosing to take a big chance that changed history. Like, directly causing the founding of the First or Second empire, or something similarly monumental enough that it could make her second order deity. That way she remains incredibly powerful despite having literally no believers for very extended periods of time.

Sean Boyd

Who else was there to send?

Sean Boyd

Unfathomable Rat Lust is now Fathomed

MAS

I’m not sold on this chapter, but the coinpurse is out.

Joe Rachman

Two further thoughts. 1) Tristan is basically walking plot device. His status means that he's constantly doomed to be dragged into unlikey high-stakes events. Hell even his cabal exists because of him - how likely is that you otherwise get a group with the best scion of the most hated family in the world, the sworn sword of some terrible buried atrocity of a god, and the daughter of the last queen of a conquered people saddled with all their knowledge and a shadow sister. Add to that other unlikely sorts he's connected to Izel, Cressida, Tupoc, Abuela, Hage, Wen (whatever he's hiding), etc... 2) He's a high priest, walking shrine, and near Saint (Harmonious as Fortuna puts it). He's apprenticed to a heresiarch (Discordant) who seems like a priest who ate her god. An interesting dynamic.

Luis Fz

Couldn't wait for this chapter and now can't wait for the next. Poor Hooks now understand why her sister is so attracted to this fifth of a man

Ryu

Also the group hug, the prayer, the bow? And he charmed two cute girls into killing a god?? My guy just straight up aura farming atp…

Azra

Probably the best chapter of the whole series yet, it was just sublime. The culmination of the plotline, the perfect emotional and impactful moment for Tristan/Fortuna and the Khaimovs, an epic battle, awesome prayer from Tristan, badass line from the Khaimovs, a very satysfying end, man i loved every single word

Joseph

Nah, not expendable, I was beginning to love him, take the other brigade members. Tristan was beautiful in this chapter. It seems cunning is a great aspect for a god cuz where was the sculler in all of this? This is peak.

Ryu

Peak chapter. Literally has me on rolling around on my bed like an idiot. Also there are things in this chapter that’s GOT to be revisited: First of all, I have so many questions about Tristan’s contract. A shrine? How, or more importantly, why? And the way everything was revealed in front of everyone, that’s another headache in the making. And Fortuna, where do I even begin. Angharad made a comment about how she’s a powerful spirit and how she could do something before Maryam cut her off. And considering her patron god, “powerful spirit” is not a term she would use commonly. I wonder if her power could counter the Fisher’s. Also I can’t help but feel that Fortuna is very different from any other gods we’ve seen. We’ve never seen a god caring about their contractor as much as Fortuna does hers. It’s because he’s her shrine? I don’t think so. We know from this chapter that the way Tristan has been using his contract goes against *what she is*. Gods are supposed to hate that, but still she stays with him. How deep does her bond with Tristan go? Does it influence her? Any other god wouldn’t have cared as much whether or not their contractor becomes a Saint but Fortuna actively prevents Tristan from doing so, can that be seen as Tristan being a stable Saint? And of course most importantly, Angharad was checking out Fortuna… I think that’s admirable, really, considering the chaos they were in.

Larc

Holy shit

Sean Boyd

The second time Marysm's driven a shiny spear into mad old gods.

nothingtoseehere

Damn

Noble Solana-Walkinshaw

Fuck yeah. Never have I been happier to be paying for the Patreon. What an epic chapter. I was skeptical anything could top the Tristan-Song-Maryam-Angharad cascade but this capped it beautifully

Rune of Doom

Based on the hair streaks, and the luck being perceived as streaks of gold, I expect Tristan's nails have turned to gold, or at least something that looks like gold. Which he is absolutely going to *hate* because of all the time he's going to have spend concealing them (and his hair). Which makes objectively minor changes a very fitting price indeed.

Madeleine D

AAAAYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LETS deep breath FUCKEN GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPL

Darryl Greensill

Fantastic chapter! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GXFSK0ogeg4

Calico

Allo Ace Tristan and Maryam is so beautiful i'm here for it

NuclearUmbrella

Our favorite head priest better get a reward for that performance. Maybe a pack howitzer. Or the organ gun.

EndlessTurtle

That was very satisfying

Poop McScoop

Ee's never gonna get that werewolf pc he's been wanting to write.

Joe Rachman

You know how Tristan was unpleasant to Tupoc's god as he felt like someone who should have died dozens of times? Looking at him now must be like an aneurysm.

joie01

is it next friday yet?

Rune of Doom

Same here. Ho. Lee. Sheet. (Orson Welles clapping)

Aguido Horatio Davis

What they said.

PoiDess

Going rate is 1 rama per nail clipping

PoiDess

his POV would be great though considering his snarky murderhobo psyche, trying to fill up the slot. And blaming the inconvenience all on Tristan

PoiDess

I bet he's also going to complain that they got severely underpaid on that contract

Joe Rachman

That could work. Though Tupoc's crew is then light on muscle having lost its Skiritai and it's mad bomber

PoiDess

Yer a Priest Tristan

PoiDess

NGL I would read a spin-off Serial just about Tupoc's misadventures

Joe Rachman

Song torn between disapproval and desire for brigade funds

Pteromys Momonga

Maybe that's how Cressida can join without an embarrassing nickname: she'll have some leverage, since the Fourth needs a fourth.

Jonah Ree

Can't wait to hear Wen bragging to others about how his brigade "already killed a god on their first excursion"

PoiDess

Well he could sell em to people who go through nail biting experiences that do require lady luck on their side

Markos El-Far

I thought Tristan was terrifying enough already.

Musclerelaxant

Literal tears in my eyes, EE you’ve done it again

PoiDess

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Joe Rachman

Also noooo Expendable. You had the coolest contract... Tupoc will need to recruit a new member of his brigage now too since the minimum number is 4.

Joe Rachman

Also his nails have "turned into solid luck" from being right on the edge of being a Saint. What does that even mean? If he clips them are they going to shoot off at unlikely angles blinding foes and breaking mirrors? Can have give the clippings to people like congealed aether - like the Golden Ram's blood - which people can use for luck?

Pteromys Momonga

Absolutely incredible. The Thirteenth group hug, Expendable's last stand, the plot twist with Tristan's contract, Cleon and Minister Floros getting moments of redemption, everyone being sassy to Oduromai... this chapter might have displaced 74 as my favorite. These characters feel so real and compelling, and watching them interact in various configurations is always a delight. Maryam and Tristan have been my favorite pair (as friends or otherwise) since Book One, though, so I had several silent "awww!" moments here at how much they care about each other.

Matteo Mazza

Holy Fucking Shit.

Joe Rachman

Well fuck me. Honestly the highlight was Tristan there. So much suddenly making sense - including his constant attraction of misfortune and miracle...

Cay de Dios

Fuck that was good

Henoros

That is one heck of a climax to the arc.

Miles Zheng

I love this story so much
