My guess as to why they did not open the gates, is because they stated the clones have the same abilities as them. So you could assume that they also can open the gates, they just didn't because neither Guy nor Lee opened them. Just my head canon.

You asked me to rate the team guy fight? Nah that's a 1/10. How are they supposed to make themselves stronger than their original selves after reaching exhaustion? That literally makes no logical sense. And there were too many reused clips of animations. You can tell the budget was really low for this one.

To answer your question, I believe Team Guy fighting their clones was filler, so filler parts usually don't make sense or are just weird and out of place compared to the main story.
