I'm just imagining someone in the NHL mega-management being a fan of Check Please! and approaching their fandom from the other direction-- while so many people have become real hockey fans because of the comic, what if someone who was already big in hockey became a fan of expansion teams? I mean, I know that N just did her homework and probably isn't tapped into the etheric hockey network, but STILL Y'ALL WHAT IF EXPANSION TEAMS ARE AN EXPRESSION OF CHECK PLEASE FANDOM HEAR ME OUT OKA--!

Just caught up on the OT blog that I've missed, and Dear N: you would have enjoyed the Fan Studies Network Australasia conference I was at last week. Lots of folks are asking the questions you're asking, so that's super cool (esp. since your storytelling is what drew me to my PhD in the first place!)
