⭐ Digital Coloring for Comics ⭐
Over the last two weeks, I've been creating teaching materials for the coloring workshop at CCS. Here's what I've cooked up!
How To Apply Shading To Flats. The shadow of an object has the complementary color of the light source. It also has a contrasting value that is complementary to the light source. In the following examples, note how the light source and its shadow interact with one another.

Base Color.

A bright yellow light source with low saturation will create saturated purple-blue shadows.

A white light source has no other complement than black. The bright pale unsaturated white light is met with a dark shadow.
One Approach To Coloring Foregrounds And Backgrounds. Contrast between your foreground and background creates clarity for the reader when interpreting a panel or page. There are many ways to build cohesive and pleasing contrast in your compositions.
- Warm Colors vs. Cool Colors
- Saturated vs. Unsaturated
- Low Values vs. High Value

Patrons, if you ever want me to write up a more detailed tutorial on coloring, just comment below! I can share more of my course material. 👍
⭐ Project Yesenia: Thumbnails ⭐
- Working on a graphic novel is a lot of ups and downs. Last month I was running into writer's block. To alleviate the creative stop, I (reluctantly) took a week to explore the world and characters of Project Yesenia. I'm happy to say that this exploration propelled the writing forward! I'm learning that, as a writer, I like to cling to a linear approach in storytelling—tangible results, churning out one chapter after another. But dragging myself from chapter to chapter, when I'm not inspired, might actually do more harm than good. Shifting to a non-linear experimental approach (writing scenes out of order and sketching out situations that may never happen in the story) has been great fuel for writing!
- Act I of the story is thumbnailed. (80 pages!)

I love the main character of this graphic novel a ton.
That's it for me! See ya on the stream. 👍
