I have heard a theory that Oni wear tiger pattern loincloth because they were partly inspired by depictions of Hercules (who wears Lion skin) which traveled from Greece to Japan along with Buddhism. When Alexander the great reached india, Greek and Buddhist ideas influenced each other. In Greece this gave rise to Epicurean and Stoic Philosophy, and in India this influenced Buddhist Iconography. Hercules (wielding a club and wearing lion skin) became a Wrathful deity, and eventually traveled to Japan where his symbolism mixed with local mythology to create Modern Oni. I apologize if this does not translate well. It's hard to explain even in English.
