This video is Lesson 1 of the 'Learning to see' term - in this lesson I'll introduce the course, show you how to make a blind drawing, explain the partial peek drawing process and discuss the marks in Egon Schiele's line drawings. To get full benefit from the course, watch one video per month, practicing for at least 2 hours per week over the course of that month, before moving on to the next lesson.
You will need:
Paper
A pen or pencil
Optional: charcoal or compressed charcoal
Your assignments are:
Make 7 blind contour drawings of 3+ mins each
Make one or more partial peek drawing of 10+ mins
Optional: Make a transcription of Egon Schiele's drawing of Lilly Steiner
Tip: If you're in a hurry, click on the settings wheel on the bottom right hand corner of the video to adjust the playback speed.

Hey everyone - I loved this first lesson and thought it was very interesting, but I'm a bit unclear about the aim of the blind drawing. Does it matter what the drawings look like - as in, is the idea for them to look more and more like the thing being drawn from, or is it simply an exercise in following lines/seeing things without interpreting them?

Thank you Fleur! I'm so glad it's been helpful so far :)

Wow! Such a super lesson, it was really good to pause and do the exercises in between, I really felt able to give them more of a go. Very interesting to understand how Egon Schiele worked as well, once mentioned about the observational lines, I could really see what you meant, I will be looking at artwork so differently now, thank you!

I've enjoyed the first session and find your presentation and gentle, encouraging explanations so helpful. I've already noticed some progress.

Loved this first lesson, thank you, Jake! Put this on just after I woke up and found it a lot easier to draw the blind contour and peek drawings with some classical music (which I never do, fun suggestion) and a still sleepy brain. I look forward to getting my practice in and continuing the series. :) Appreciate your constant encouragement throughout the lesson too.

agh ...its no problem at all re the delay. Gives me more time for lesson 1 which didn't come out until Thursday of last week. I'm happy with every Thursday if it gives you more time ?? I'm just so glad I'm not having a senior moment thinking I'd binned the e mail !
Draw Brighton
It's not you Pat, it's me! I'm just uploading the 2nd lesson today - the delay last week has knocked be behind this week too so I'm very sorry for the hassle.

Oh my goodness, it was so very boring - as I was doing a final check on Monday I found an editing error in the video and had to take it down again. Then, while I was fixing it the extra footage I dragged in crashed my poor Mac and I had to buy a new external hard drive and take everything off to make room to edit the video. Im not used to the processing needed for 4K videos! Long story short, I have taken professional advice and sorted out a good long term solution so it should be plain sailing from here on. Thanks for all of your enthusiasm and support Heidi :)

In a previous life I built websites and managed a web developers shop. You did a Herculean job getting your tech issues fixed. It’s very stressful when a launch is planned and problems develop. So glad I’m past it, sorry you were stuck in it. What you’ve created is impressive. So looking forward to digging into this course today. 😊 Thank you for your hard work.

This looks wonderful! Worth the wait. :-)
