Pet? A crow / raven. It fits Ning personality and focus on information. Playing to his strengths. A snake is a good option on the poison angle. A rat would be funny, as in a lab rat. I am favouring the crow. In an unrelated matter, I have joined the PAtreon to thank you for the many fun moments your story has given me, but the number of chapters ahead is too few. a small monkey. I see birds, wolves, and foxes far too often in xianxia. Cat's as well. Occasionally there will be a gorilla, a rat, or a gu of some kind. But the only tiny monkey's that I see in story's usually mock the protagonist before inevitably dying.

white garter snake, stealthy, ambushes prey, natural pest control, since they eat insects and rodents that can damage plants, if you give opalescent scales it's on track to a coatl evolution line
