Most of the people there wouldn't have had somewhere to move to. It's mostly about just getting the scale right. Using Cyberpunk population density in a setting like Star Wars really underplayed just how many people will die in these events. It'd be like a bomb getting dropped on a city of ten million and saying only 10,000 people died when the entire city is gone and it's pretty clear that all 10 million died. It's just giving a more accurate account of how things would go in a war of the scale that's being set up.

CkLance

You mean the same tower and general areas outside the tower that were mostly abandoned after the first Hutt was killed? Those hypothetical people wouldn't be there to die regardless. The population inside and around the tower was further decreased when Atom freed everyone and dismissed the criminals who didn't align with their goals. Not understanding why this is something you're stressing over.

Kasikan

See above post. It goes over things a bit more for Star Wars scale.

Nar Shaddaa is known as one of the biggest crime hubs in the universe. It'd easily house a massive number of slaves, criminals, all sorts who over generations ended up producing kids there due to all the criminals, prostitutes, slaves and what not being endlessly bred for more to sell. You have to take into account they might not be as populated as some of the places in the trillions, but they're still a city planet. Which means hundreds of billions easy. Especially when it's listed as having as many layers of floors as it does. That's not in one section, but the entire moon is layered. Considering the size of moons can be larger than planets depending on the moon and planet it's orbiting, that's a massive area and massive number of people. Now as far as an orbital strike against a building is concerned. That would take out far more than a block. These aren't precision strikes. Not to mention like I said before for scale of population. The towers the Hutts are known to live in are massive, we're talking over a thousand stories tall. The part that is above the regular layer that most people would equate with a ground floor would be easily hundreds of floors. Since no one can build higher than a Hutt. They must always be above others. So they build massive structures to show off their wealth and power. Now add into that they've got hundreds if not thousands of floors under the tower part that's sticking up and to be that tall how wide it'd have to be in order to support itself and you'll get numbers in the millions to tens of millions easily living there. Now orbital bombardment to destroy something that large wouldn't be a block, it'd take a massive area of miles across to hit enough of the tower to bring it down. Since that's just how large the towers are. They're on average at least a few miles across at their width and multiple times that in height. It's something people can't quite grasp because we're not technologically at the level to create such things, but the scale of Star Wars is at that insane level where buildings are sometimes larger and house more people than the greatest cities on Earth would be capable of. It's hard to truly grasp that when we're just not even close to that level. It'd be like giving a kid Lincoln logs and expecting them to be able to understand just what goes into building a tower a hundred floors high. The difference is just too much to truly grasp until you've actually gone into such a building and gone to it's top. Once there you'll realize it's far greater than your imagination. It's the down side of trying to fit something small like Night City into the setting. It's just so insignificant in a place like Star Wars. If it was there a building got taken down, the 10k or so dead would make sense, but in Star Wars the scale is just too different.

I really do wonder what Smasher will think of this. While he doesn't truly love his progeny, he does seem to try to hold them up to standards. Something only the females of his line seem to manage to any degree. Now this clone (and only he could figure Atom's biological origin out instantly by his package) has managed to start measuring up. Orbital Bombardment isn't the same as a nuke, but they've all gotta start somewhere.

Thanks for the chapter and the pics!

Nar Shaddaa is a smuggler moon so the population would naturally not reach that scale since most people capable of intra-galaxy travel would avoid going/ staying. The numbers you're quoting are more in line with major planets and some larger moons not associated with illegal activity. Regardless, there's a limit to the number of people who can fit withing a specific space.

dryskies_btb

"Heh, Smasher... Guess you're not the only one around here to survive a nuke anymore. And I think your meat double might just have you beat this time~" "... MY MEAT, MY FEAT, V-BRAT. 'COURSE HE SURVIVED. IT'S IN THE FUCKING BLOOD. IF HE GOT HIMSELF KILLED BY SOME SLUGS, I'D BRING HIM BACK JUST TO MURDER HIM ALL OVER AGAIN OUT OF SHAME."

dryskies_btb

Do you think the numbers need changing? I could see a casualty toll of, like, 100k to 200k but there's still a limit to how many people can be fit into a one block radius. Maybe I am vastly underestimating that limit though. I imagine Zorba's tower was rather similar to the Burj Khalifa. A quick google search puts its max occupation at ~10k. So that's kind of what I based my death toll on. But with the surrounding neighborhood and whatever's below it, yeah, I guess I could see, like, 100k total. Likely more if you get into the undercity. Probably not actual millions though. The orbital strike still only hit a very small section of Nar Shaddaa. EDIT: Yeah, I went back and changed the numbers already. A hundred thousand dead on arrival. And in the aftermath, they found maybe... 30 survivors in total. Which is kinda ridiculous, but also... turbolasers from orbit. I really can't understate how much energy and force the bombardment would've had. Bolts of PLASMA as wide as three men at full bloom + terminal velocity + ORBITAL strike + all of the buildings collapsing = a fraction of a fraction who could've possibly survived unshielded.

Thanks for an amazing chapter

kiddeath1998

And that was one intense chapter

Kasikan

He said only thousands to tens of thousand died in that attack. Star Wars major planets, moons and what not are Ecumenopolis, as in City Planets. They house trillions of people, not billions. So the sheer amount of death would have been hundreds of times that if not thousands. Especially when you have to consider major places of trade like Nar Shadda would have housed massive amounts of slaves as well as people who live there. It's one of the major Ecumenopolis that reach thousands of floors deep. Hutts like to live above the people where everyone can see them, so they'd be putting their tower which would house millions if not tens of millions of their slaves right in the heart of the larger population areas. As the people would build up around their tower to be closer to the ones that rule by their very design. Which in turn increases the population more and more with time. The Hutts have been doing that there for thousands of years. Each decade adding several more layers to that endless city. So with that in mind, the tower and the area around it would be hundreds of millions of lives easy if not billions. Taking that tower down the way they did would have likely cost a few hundred million people their lives. It's one of the main points of Star Wars is how the Core, like Coruscant are massive resource drains on the Rim, as they require food and resources for trillions of people who do basically nothing and contribute near nothing to the rest of the galaxy. It's what leads to pretty much all of the major conflicts. It's also how the Sith keep coming back due to how many people resent the Core Worlds. The whole Separatists bit from movies 1-3 were largely due to that as well. Imagine having to supply resources endlessly at near slave labor levels for thousands of years while a planet that contributes nothing needs hundreds if not thousands of planets to be drained to keep them alive. That's Star Wars.

Thank you for the great chapter, I am very excited to see how the retaliation goes and how the rest of the Galaxy reacts to what the Hutts just did. Stay safe out there and keep up the good work!

ExodiaTheForbiddenOne

Atom is just aura farming at this point and I love it !

Gamesempie

We'll need to work on that handle. Something to put on the list of things to do once their settled back into the city.

Linkman245

Cant wait to see smasher and v's reaction to the attack and him surviving

Laplase

Classic, another one bites the dust. I hope he stakes that slug to a way somewhere the Hutts can see it from orbit. Glad Atom was able to pull it all together so fast, must have been those charges into coordination and shatter-points coming through in the clutch. Great, pics of Panam by the way.

Zai

Theres so much else as well like recruiting jedi, killing another hutt, freeing more slaves, making it back to night city.

jp9901

Get Adam Smasher to join! Man needs a couple of Hutt kills under his belt! Hell, make it a competition between him and Atom!

jp9901

Surviving an orbital strike has to be 400 points minimum

Zai

Great chapter. I hope he gets more points for his survival and everything else.

Austin

Thanks for the update
