Congratulations on the adoption of your daughter! My husband raised my son since he was 6 months old. He always called my husband Dad and they have a great relationship! My son's biological father had zero contact after the first two months of his life. My husband and I talked about him adopting my son. However, due to reasons I won't go into, getting full custody so we could file for the adoption just wasn't possible. When my son was in middle school, he asked us if it was possible to change his last name to ours, without doing the full adoption. For a year he kept asking and asking, so we filed with the probate court and got his last name changed to my husband's. The probate judge was great. He asked why we didn't file for the full adoption, so we explained the circumstances and he said "Well there is another way. You can wait until he turns 18 and file for an adult adoption, so all of the red tape goes away and there's no way for anyone to contest it! It would only cost you the filing fee... no lawyers, either." So that's exactly what we did! On his 18th birthday, we took him back to the same judge and filed for his adoption. Two weeks later we had a hearing with the judge and that was it! He was adopted! We thanked the judge for all of his help. We never would have known there was such a thing as an adult adoption if it wasn't for him. It wasn't easy at all to wait until he was 18, but the reward was so sweet! Our son will be 28 in November! My two guys are closer than ever. They're always together... our son is now also a Firefighter/EMT just like his Dad, at the same firehouse! Around Father's Day, I always remind my husband what a big deal it is that he stepped up when he didn't have to... and how much we love him for it! Congratulations to your whole family! I'm so happy for you guys!

If you don’t like a cultural practice, that’s totally fine. As a more traditional Asian American, I’ve never understood care homes since for the longest time, we had our grandparents living with someone in the family. My uncle took care of his parents for his entire life and my maternal grandma lived with my uncle and visited us and my aunt for long stretches. It all changed when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s but yeah. I still don’t vibe with care homes as much as the idea that family stays together and takes cares of each other.
